3080 rig - thoughts?

Hi all

Returning to gaming to spend more time with friends, and want something with good longevity but not bleeding edge. Typically play FPS games. I need everything apart from GPU essentially (bought a 3080).

Wondering if I'm missing anything obvious here. Going for quiet v ultra cooling to be sympathetic to noise inside the house.

Monitor to be purchased later (using a 27" workstation 1080p currently which will obviously need updating).

I will probably buy a Windows key separately for a Win10 pendrive.

This would be optimal mate, you've an odd storage set up. RAM that is too slow, a motherboard that wouldn't suit the CPU and a cooler that wouldn't be optimal for one of the hottest CPU's on the market.

Also the PSU could use a bit of beef the new GPU's draw serious power. Silver warranty is always worth a fiver too

Thanks for taking the time Steve. Price creeping up 😅 maybe I can live with one M.2 drive for now, and the original PSU. I guess just reaching the minimum 750w recommended creates some slight risk.

I'm keen on quiet which attracted me to the Fractal Define 7 + that CPU cooler. A friend of mine has a gaming PC of similar spec and the noise is really noticeable! But maybe it always will be.

If you need to make savings you can ditch the RAM for now and add it later.

I really wouldn't want less than a 850W for a build with a 3080 in it. Just think how much juice a 3080 draws now so what's going to come after it?

We don't build PC's for our needs now we try to build PC's for our projected uses in future. You want a build that'll last 5-10 years not one that'll last 3-5 if you get my drift?

The 5800x runs really hot so I try to recommend the best options available for it. The Corsair coolers are also very quiet compared to other coolers that offer similar performance. I'd say I've gone for the best option for that CPU though

Secondly the Fractal Cases are great especially the one you've selected but I just don't think there is a case on the market that can compete with the 5000X in that price range for features, space and airflow at the minute. Plus I think it looks fantastic but hey that's just my opinion. You wouldn't be wrong to prefer the Fractal 7 Define

If we wanted to make savings though you can do this with a change of the case and dropping 2 sticks of RAM. You can always add more RAM later

Good point. Appreciate your reasoning here - PSU are 'for life' and RAM is for Christmas, or something.

Think this is about there and just needs me to look into the case a bit (y). Silly question but I assume the coloured RGB stuff can be turned off?

Yes, the RGB can be turned off, but this significantly reduces the performance of the PC 🤣

For £9 more you could go for the Fractal Meshify C which wouldn't have the RGB front but has a mesh front panel to help with airflow

OK so I have actually placed the order for this now (4 days ago, in pre-production) but with 3600 RAM as recommended by their customer support.

Only concern I have is the Corsair iCue 5000x case... I am seeing a lot of reviews saying out of the box performance is poor because of the lack of front and top airflow from the glass case and the lack of a rear-facing fan. It's also huge

Is cooling going to be an issue for me, in particular given how the cooler is at the top? would it be worth switching to a different case? I wasn't sure if extra standard fans can be specced.

Any help appreciated, but may be better just asking PCS I guess

The 5000X is a good case, your rad will be top mounted so there’ll be no issues with cooling.

It’s better than a 4000X for airflow; I have one of those with a H100i and an extra exhaust SP120 Elite I added myself and I’m not experiencing any temperature issues whatsoever 🙂👍

If you want quiet your original choice of the Fractal R7 is easily the best option. I have the R6 with glass side panel and it's amazing how quiet it keeps the GPU. The build has pinged back and forth a fair bit, not sure where you have landed, so below is what I would tend to go with.

You'll also want a 4k 144hz monitor to pair with such a rig.

I will look at the R7 cost and see if that can be swapped. Noise is an issue for me, but it's always going to be a trade off vs temps (I don't plan to overclock).

I need to think a bit more about the monitor, currently got a 27" 1080p so will need to upgrade that - hoping I might get some Working from home allowance to help with that.

So yeah - does anyone else have a view on the Fractal R7 vs the Icue500x ? I don't care about RGB, just temps vs noise really. Both look OK (discrete is my watchword).

Edit - they are also the same price. I'm leaning to the R7 on size and quiet. I guess I would need to ask for a SWAP asap

If you want discrete the the R7 is the choice, the 5000X is anything but discrete.

The R7 is more enclosed yes but it's large enough and designed well enough that the airflow is pretty decent. Both are good choices

Seems to run hot... at least with the door closed. Maybe I'm just splitting hairs here. Very hard to decide without side by side reviews.

if you read it, thats only relevant if youre using air cooling which we would never suggest, with an AIO its very effective
