Hello all,

The main reason for this build is for VR. Budget is ~£2000. I'd really like to try and get in a 3080 within this budget although I'm sure you'll all keep me right if that's achievable!

All comments and questions welcome :)

may i ask what monitor this system will be paired up with
Good question and tbh I'm not quite sure, yet. That was something I was going to ask recommendations for.

Taking a punt I'd say something along the lines of 4K with 144Hz? Although open to suggestions if this wouldn't be a good choice.

You need to increase your PSU and also cooling.

Your storage seems a bit odd, would be fitting an M.2 Gen 4 drive or at least a gen 3 500gb.

Thanks. Wrt RAM, is there much of a difference between 3000 & 3200Mhz?

4k 144hz monitor will set you back about £800 so just factor that into your budget :D i was shocked at the price of them aswell !

It’s one of those areas I believe a number of 3080 / 3090 owners do not research enough, then end up with cheap screens due to cash spent on card.

@gavmac review here on 3080 v 6800.

TBH I think there are more than one two 'gear freaks' who just want to be able to say they have a 3080/3090 to impress their mates.....

Perfect, thanks.

Do you think the 3080 is correct for this build or would an AMD card be better?
i still think nvidia have the edge this generation and due to past driver support i'm not overly keen on amd gpu's a 3080 is fine if you have a monitor to match it or your in the process of having a monitor that will match it otherwise its a bit of a waste of money 1440p 144hz a 3070 is a good recommendation. 4kgaming = 3080

i think of it like ok i can afford a 3080 thats great ill have a fantastic gpu but to fit it into my budget im going to have to go for a cheaper motherboard lower ram minimum required power supply cheaper case. Then in 4-5 years time i want to upgrade oh no !!!! my base build was sub par because i needed to get a 3080 in there !!! . A strong base build is far more important then the gpu especially when you dont have a monitor to make use of the gpu ! the spec agent cooper has done is a solid base build with a 3080 in it

If it was me looking for VR, I'd go for the 3080...unless it's a low-end VR unit of course. VR is only going to become more demanding as it becomes even more ppular (much like games are becoming more demanding due to increasing graphics etc)
I would agree with @Nursemorph entirely.

VR is very quickly becoming more and more demanding, and to keep the framerates above 90 going forward, it's the one time I would be happy overspeccing the GPU.

VR games are progressing in their capabilities and graphical performance so quickly since the release of Half Life: Alyx which showed what was actually possible. That has set the standard for others to follow.

Games like FS2020, HL:A and Elite Dangerous really need some oomf and I expect there will be more and more games that leverage that power in the near future.

VR is at a really exciting time atm. It's exploding!
