Hi all,

I am considering buying a beast of a PC to invest and use for quite a few years. On the builder, with RAM i can get 32gb 3600mhz or can go allway up to 128gb 3000mhz. So what is best to do, go with quantity or quality?

Many thanks in advance, also is this overkill? i dont mind spending, if it worth it. Mainly used for gaming and music production on DAW like fruity loops which already do on laptop but does not cut it anymore so want to upgrade for both things.

First of all, the monitor from research that is best and potential future proof (4k gaming etc) I have seen is not available on here, called PG278QR ROG Swift 27" 2560x1440 TN G-Sync 165Hz Gaming Widescreen LED Slim Bezel Monitor Black. This does;

LED Backlit
2560x1440 Resolution
1000:1 Contrast Ratio
350cd/m² Brightness
1ms Response Time
1x DisplayPort
1x HDMI
G-SYNC

I'd probably
- get a bit better case,
- a pre-OCed build,
- the RMx series PSU,
- rethink the storage (do you really get any benefit from the Pro/Sm over the Evo/Pm lines?),
- drop the USB PCIe card (I doubt you own this many USB 3.1 devices already)
- ditch the fan controller

If you need a quiet build, get the RMx PSU and a Fractal case.

Are you sure your music uses are really going to need 64gb RAM? Perhaps you could get 32gb and always upgrade in the future. For gaming, there is no benefit to more than 16gb.

What's the spec of your laptop that doesn't cut it for music?

Worth pointing out, the ROG Swift monitor you mention is not 4k, but 2k.

What's the build for? And what's your max budget?

Thanks guys for response much appreciated, I will have a look when come home as off to slavery of work! Money not really a problem, it's whether it value for money is the question.

A big thing as well is the monitor, not point getting a really good px capable of 4k but not having monitor to do it. If I am wrong on the one I suggested, can you advise which one is good for around 27 inch + ?

Many thanks again, will review again this evening :)

Again, what's the computer for? We can't advise on it's suitability without knowing it's usage.

27" you could consider the Acer predator XB271HK but for gaming at 4K you may want to look at 32".
Don't think you can't get really value for money when spending more than £2k but it helps to have a maximum budget to find the best you can get within your budget as well as making sure that nothing unnecessary is added. Trying to spend a lot to futureproof your system is not ideal if you could instead spend less and upgrade your gpu in a couple of years.

Looking no more than £3.5k, but do you guys think the 4k thing even worth it? Ah it's a fun but expensive game PC's lol. I would like to be able to run games decently for a good few years and be able to cope with music production, hence the very high spec. There any great increase in performance and quality from having 4k monitor and 1080ti compared to having like standard 1080 and 1080 hp monitor? I am happy to spend but if not much greater performance gained then I'm all for saving money as well.

Thank you guys so much again for your comments

On me dinner break had another look, took advice on configuring a pre over clocked system, have come up with this? Have changed the ram to 32gb but with the 3600mhz speed and reduced to just 1tb ssd drive, which has saved a bit as well, so that k you for suggestions. Let me know what you think

I would definitely suggest a better CPU cooler than that for an OCed Skylake-X CPU. I'd get the best one that can fit in your case.

I would drop the soundcard, it is poorer than the sound offered by the motherboard.
I would replace the cooler, H80i is beaten hands down by the Noctua (more efficient, quieter, cheaper). If you definitely want a liquid cooler, take the H100i with quiet fans.
I would replace the power supply with the RM equivalent, as they are quieter and more efficient.

The above advice seems sound.

For the Skylake-X with an OC I'd definitely recommend the H100i or H110i. And if they don't fit I'd recommend a better case where they do fit.

You could switch the SM961 for a PM961 and save ~£80 or so

Performance seems very competitive

Indeed, the H110i is highly recommended, but it doesn't come with ultra quiet fans.
If you look at the Corsair web page, there are no static pressure quiet edition fans in 140mm. No idea why.

Though, for an expensive build like this, I would definitely take the quiet R5 case and stick the H110i in it, to keep my monster CPU properly chilled.

The quiet fans PCS use I believe are Akasa ones they also use for the 'liquid series'. (just checked and they list "Akasa Apache Black Ultra Quiet Fans")

You're right that PCS don't sell the H110i with the quieter fans. Although I think an H110 would be quieter than an H100 with stock fans which this review suggests might be the case: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/corsair_h110i_gt_review,12.html - I guess due to the 140mm fans.

Thanks guys much appreciated will have another look tonight with the suggestions. Also on the other topic I have raised about monitors and 4k etc, it seems that the 4k think has a bit to go yet in regards to monitors really being able to take advantage and do it justice of the power, so I'm thinking of dropping the 1080ti for a standard 1080 and get a gaming monitor that was suggested before. Thanks again guys much appreciated

Probably better to stick to one topic for your actual spec because otherwise you'll get different feedback and conversations going on. :)

Oussebon

You could save £120 by going with 3200MHz RAM. There won't be all that many games where you find yourself saying "Darn, I wish I'd spend £120 more on 4000MHz".

You can knock £80 off with the PM961 SSD.

... case in point, I meant to post this in the other topic and posted here instead as I had both open at once.
