I watched a review on youtube on 1440p monitors and 2 970 ti's hammered a single 980 ti and there is only like a 10 fps different between to 970 ti's and 2 980 ti's but a single 980 ti had pretty low fps on ultra settings like 30-40.

That's not really correct for the OP's case.

The review you posted was against a GTX980 (granted they might have talked about the 980Ti but I didn't watch the whole thing as the title indicated it was the GTX980 vs gtx970sli, apologies if they do)

The 970 sli is only marginally better in certain games than a single 980Ti on the same settings. Granted the 980Ti is slightly more expensive than two 970's but the 980Ti will draw less power and produce less heat.

For my money, I'd say the 980Ti was the card to get. PC Gamer have an interesting article about this here: http://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-review/

For the OP, I'd opt for a larger secondary HDD, 1Tb won't last long :)
