4050 has a 35w power limit

Hello everyone, hope you're well & swell,

I am having an issue with my custom built Elimina Pro 16".

When I first got the laptop, the GPU (4050) seemed to be pulling 85w in games but I noticed that it was performing significantly worse than all the benchmarking videos on YouTube with the same specs. I rememver a 10-20fps difference but whatever. Now some days have passed and I've noticed the GPU is only ever pulling 35w. The CPU (7735HS) is also ever pulling 30w in games which is fine but it is throttling when under 75c. I am at a loss. I have a hunch that this is a power limit setting however it is way too low and the laptop seems to be stuck in "Office" mode all the time.

Switching the power modes on the laptop with its physical button change nothing but the LED since day 1.

The maximum operating temperature for a 7735HS is 95c but mine never exceeds 75c.
It pulls 40w for a second at the start of a Cb23 test and then dips all the way down to 30w indefinitely hovering around 70c.

The laptop also never gets loud when gaming because the temperatures are very low for a gaming laptop in my opinion...

I did a fresh install of Windows today and only installed the latest graphics drivers and MSI Afterburner and the issue is still there.

Power plan on Windows is configured for maximum possible performance. What else can I do?

I'm just hoping to squeeze out the full potential of this machine and I thank you in advance for reading/helping.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I've added another M.2 drive from which all my games are running from.

When you did the fresh install did you install the control panel? Is it operating as you would expect?

The Control Panel is typically what creates, installs and manages your power limits linked to the power plans. If not configured correctly you will have the issues you are seeing.

Just got home, installed control center, rebooted, tried switching between the profiles and it is still capped at 30w for CPU and 35w for GPU.

This is on a clean install of Windows...

Are your drivers all configured? Can you post a screenshot of your device manager?

Are you looking at any of these in particular?

I'm unsure about drivers as I did a fresh install of Windows. Installed Steam, MSI Afterburner, Graphics drivers and Control Center.

Just tried to switch between optimus on and off and the issue still persists.

Multimedia controller having the missing driver suggests that Control Panel isn't the right version or isn't configured correctly.

Are you absolutely certain that you have an 85w variant of the GPU though? There are many configurations. Can you confirm with PCS which version you have and if you should be seeing better performance?

The naming on laptops with GPUs always annoys me as there can be so much variation with the same model.

Just to check, you got the control centre from your account downloads and it's for Windows 11? No change to the version of OS you were using?

Incredible. I was looking through Control Center's power profiles and noticed that it wouldn't allow me to use custom profiles on battery. Weird, so I checked if I had forgotten to plug the battery back in and sure enough my dumbass forgot. Everything is back to normal now.

At least we learned that these laptops don't work properly without a battery in them and only the mains plugged in haha! I would have never thought this would be the case.

Cheers for the help though.

All the best.

Most modern laptops don’t work at full power without the battery. The power draw of modern cpus and gpus is far beyond what most mobile power supplies can provide so they will always use some battery power even when plugged in.

But your drivers don’t seem to be fully configured yet, have you applied all optional updates from windows update?

Windows says I'm all up to date. Here are all the other drivers that came with my purchase. Do you reckon installing these would fix the Multimedia Controller driver? Not sure if it's even a problem though. Thanks!

That’s windows update. Drivers are served through optional updates.

Multimedia drivers typically relate to audio so my guess is it's either going to be that or the card reader.

If you right click on the multimedia controller and update manually, you should be able to point it at the root folder for those drivers. It should be able to pick it up from there.

Audio it was. Thanks a lot!
