Hi,

I am thinking of buying the following machine to run Ubuntu. Any comments?

Chassis & Display Octane Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache
Memory (RAM) 64GB HyperX IMPACT 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (4 x 16GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M - 6.0GB DDR5 Video RAM, DirectX® 12, G-SYNC

I have had compatibility issues in the past with graphics cards and Ubuntu. Has anyone got the GTX970M to work with Ubuntu?

Thanks, Paul

I have the GTX 970 in my Octane, although it is the older version. The Ubuntunt x.org driver did not work but as soon as I switched to an nVidia driver (there are two listed in the "additional drivers" section) everything was fine. I think with the Skylake CPU you may need to make sure you have the latest Linux kernel as well.

I have the Defiance II which has the Intel i7-6820HK and a GTX970M. I've written up a how-to (for installing Ubuntu on the Defiance II) here:

I have also written up some notes on switching between nVidia and Intel graphics here:

At the moment I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 beta 2 (I think it's beta 2) along with the nVidia 361.42 driver. I can switch between the two, but it's cumbersome (I have to select Intel or nVidia using sudo prime-select [intel | nvidia], then reboot, go in to the BIOS, then select MSHYBRID or DISCRETE GPU). Also read my notes about powering off the nVidia GPU - I have included the scripts I created to do this.
