670MX and 675MX

Kepler refresh of 670M and 675M should mean performance improvement and cooler temps over the 670M and 675M respectively.

I'm very keen on a 17.3" Optimus IV which currently comes with the 660M. Anyone think it might be possible to replace the 660M with either of these new cards when they get released?

Sure, the Vortex III would be able to accept both these new cards, but I really do not like the keyboard layout and am not fussed about the backlight.

I doubt that the optimus will ever support the cards I'm afraid. The reason being, you don't normally see a x60 card in the optimus laptops. Usually the vortex series look after the x60s to the x80s if that makes sense! I think the reason this time is (don't quote me on this!) that the 660 is just a slightly higher clocked version of the 650 meaning temps aren't too much higher. I doubt you will ever see a 670 in the optimus, let alone a 675. Also, I think the 660m maybe soldered down to, where as, the 670, 675 and 680 aren't. But again, don't quote me on that! Hope this helps :)

I'm afraid it is very unlikely. If you want performance, you could wait for the next line up of GPUs. It depends really, what are your uses of the laptop. Also, there is no point in waiting to buy technology unless the release is the iminant. As for your laptop, have you got a spec you are contemplating already? and what is your budget and uses?

I need a new lappy fairly soonish as my current Clevo's gpu is up the spout. I've had my eye on the 17" optimus for a while now. 660M should be sufficient for my occasional gaming needs, and within my budget of around £1k.

Although, if you want, take the hard drive out of your current laptop and put it in this laptop as a secondary hard drive? Just an idea!

Not a problem, think about the hard drive thing though! And the GPU won't be upgradeable, very often, laptop chassis are actually built around GPUs, it won't be possible to upgrade the gpu. I'm pretty sure the gpu is soldered down in the optimus, it used to be the case at least (I think!!). If you are that desperate about the GPU, you should get a vortex or a skyfire.

I would like to see an option to upgrade to a 670mx/675mx in the Vortex lll chassis. Feel like I've been screwed over slightly.

Just an update since these new GPUs have now been discussed on our forums.

1. We are bringing in the 4GB GTX 675MX for the 15.6" and 17.3" Vortex III (stock will be here in December, and most likely AFTER the Christmas cut-off date...).

2. We are not bringing in the GTX 670MX because the price of the two cards is almost identical. We will therefore keep to the GTX 670M on the 17.3" Vortex III.

3. We are stopping selling the GTX 670M on the 15.6" Vortex III, so if you are looking to order this ensure your order early to avoid disappointment. We have around 1 month's stock left on these.

Thank you for the info regarding the new gpus. This has re-inforced my decision to go and pull the trigger on an optimus IV.

Rather strange why Nvidia are going to release two very similarly priced gpus at the same time. It would be even stranger if one of them has significantly better performance than the other.

p.s. if I opt for the MX-4 thermal paste, will this only be applied to the cpu and not the gpu ?

670 won't go into Optimus because the laptop won't handle the heat. 670 generate a ton more heat, just look at the massive heatsink/fans needed on the Skyfire/Vortex to support it.

Not sure, but I think the Kepler gpu's : 660M, 670MX and 675MX all have the same TDP of 75W.

The 670M, 675M, 7970M and 680M are 100W TDP cards.

The cards might be identically priced right now, but a few months down the line they will come down in price a bit, and the 2 cards will be priced at the point they merit based on performance.

One forsees the 670MX is the next logical step for the Optimus range. That won't be anything to do with PCS though, the Optimus of course comes with soldered GPUS on the motherboard, so that will depend on Clevo sorting a deal out and the price of the chips leveling out. It will happen, but not for a good few months.

Notebook hardware rarely goes down in price, especially if we're talking about Nvidia here. BTW, latest benchmarks place 675MX 8-10% higher than the current Fermi 675M.
