Just called to check on an order, and was told I was position 185 in the queue :(

My initial thought was that was going to mean I would have to wait ages to receive my machine .

But, then I was informed that PCS build around 80 a day!!

I never realised that this was such a large scale operation.

Well, there are about 8 hours in a working day. That's ten an hour. One every 6 minutes...yup, I'd agree, that's pretty fast! Not bad at all! So, if we carry on with the figures, that's about 400 a week. About 20,000 + per year. They will always have more at christmas. That's one heck of a lot of PCs!! Dell sell around 45 million units (can't remember whether that was specifically PCs or inc monitors) a year. That just puts it into perspective! Dell are all over the world, That means that for about every 200 units dell produce, PCS produce 1. That may not sound like a lot but that it is an incredible feat! PCS is basically UK market. Dell is international and is something like the third biggest PC manufacturer. So, we can quite safely safely say, not bad for small (well maybe not anymore!) company in Yorkshire!

Flippin' heck that's pretty mad. I suppose it depends how many staff they have and stuff though. They'll have done it so much now that they can probably build one within half an hour each.

Kinda makes you realise that your special machine that you've spent every hour checking the progress of for the past 2 weeks doesn't quite mean the same to those building it haha!

Exactly what I was thinking! Oh the irony of it!

Well if its any use, the world record for fastest PC built (one person) is 4 minutes

A new record has been set at an annual competition to build a computer as fast as possible.

Journalist Stephen Fung put a PC together in just over four minutes at the Build Your Own PC Race for Charity in Las Vegas.

Contestants had to pack identical components into computer cases and connect their machines to the organiser's network.

LJ Rich met the racers.

Somehow I doubt PCspecialist built 80 computers a day... As already mentioned that would equal to around 20.000 computers built/sold every year! wow... I hope PCspecialist are doing that well and wish them even more but still it's hard for me to believe in that.

Geez that is fast! It would take me 4 minutes just to take out all components from the boxes... + you still have to spend 1-2 hours installing OS, drivers and updates...

If they have 10 guys building the computers and there's 8 hours in a day then it's only 1 every hour for each of them. They might not dispatch 80 a day but it's perfectly possible that they could build 80 per day.

My order has gone through building and testing and is now in QC - all in the space of a couple of hours. It should be delivered on sat.

I am a little apprehensive, as this is the first time in over 10 years that I have bought a desktop - and particularly given the lightening speed of the building and testing phases!

My lappy is in it's second working day, still in "processing". I want it now :( I'm already so impatient!

I believe the testing phases are so quick because the online tracking doesn't quite match up with the email notifications. I got an email saying mine was built and ready to be tested yet when I checked online it had only just gone into building from pre-production and stayed like that for 2 or 3 days. I think it's just always a little late in telling you what's going on so if they told you it's gone into testing, more than likely than not they've just finished testing without telling you!

You can always run your own stress tests while it's still in warranty to route out any problems.

Thanks - knowing me, I will probably run every test known to man (or should that read 'geek' :D) in first few days! In the past had a few experiences (as we all have), which have left me a bit wary.

Don't say that, I haven't had these 'experiences', I'm new to all this jazz, I assumed everything would be perfect D:

Going back to the comparison with Dell and PCS, dell are a multi-national business which is why there are so big in the market. There is one difference which in my eye's make PCS my choice when buying new Computers. PCS build better quality systems to which Dell cannot match imho. Look at what you get from PCS when you custom build your own PC, now try matching it with a Dell setup with the same/close to spec. PCS use better quality bits, offer better quality builds and actually care about its customer base. Dell mass produce desktops/laptops mainly for Business/Education purposes, the systems they sell to the general public are usually genric and expensive.

So comparing the size of these company's is a false logic, comparing Dell to Apple or HP is more logical, just like comparing PCS to Overclockers :p

P.S. Don't want to offend anyone here, just wanted to add my thoughts :)

The point of the thread was exactly that : given that PCS is everything Dell isn't ( a builder of high quality, highly customisable machines, aimed at the discerning, technically savvy power user/enthusiast) - it was a surprise when I learnt they are such a large-scale operation, mass producing pcs at such a fast rate.

I suppose not everybody is in the market for a custom PC and those that are may opt towards building their own! Where as a standard office desktop could be in every office round the country which is why it's such a larger scale.

I just stopped working at a University which had 800 staff. Every member of staff had a Dell as that's who the Procurement office had a contract with. I can honestly say I doubt a single member of staff had a custom pc at home. Perhaps some of the IT guys but then I'd imagine they'd have preferred building their own. And that was only a small Uni!

These same businesses could quite easily purchased PC's through PC Specialist and get a customised system to fit exactly the job needed at that business. It would probably work out cheaper through PCS as well but may take longer to deliver depending on the size of the order in question.

PCS might explode if a Uni put in an order for 800 Machines... But then that's not going to happen.

9 Days of Pre-Production and counting for my system...
