Hi guys,

Firstly thanks for taking the time to read this post. I'm looking for any way I can improve this build.

I recently received some money and instead of wasting it I wanted to get something sentimental from the cash. I have decided to buy a beast of a gaming rig and was hoping this would be enough to run games in ultra for some time.

I will be be using a single monitor and hope to have 1080p with around 50/60 fps for the near future.

So here it goes:

So what do you think? Is it money well spent? (£1,600 inc. VAT) and what improvement would you suggest? I have a few hundred extra but would prefer to spend that on gaming peripherals.

That is again guys!

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4790 (3.6GHz) 8MB Cache no need for the 2011 platform, the 4790 will perform exactly the same, and the platform is cheaper.

For such a high end machine I would upgrade the warranty.
24GB RAM is way overkill for gaming so you could save yourself some cash there,8GB is considered ample.
I would also suggest an SSD as 1st hard disk and caviar black for second.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply (speedy too!)

I think I will take your advice regarding the CPU, but I'm going to keep the 16gb as then I don't need to worry about upgrading for a while.

This seems to be a much more cost effective way to get what I'm looking for.

Would the CPU suggested be suitable for clocking? I thought only the "K" versions could be safely clocked. Apologies I should've mentioned subtle clocking may be on the cards.

Thanks again!

In that case you will need the 4790k version, its a bit more expensive but you do get a 4Ghz clock speed from the off, and 4.4 'auto' overclock that the chip does itself when limits allow. Look up Turbo boost for intel chips.

Ideal, thanks again for your advice.

On a personal note, would you consider this setup adequate for gaming for a few years to come? I understand 4k gaming is on its way but it's silly money hehe.

If you had my budget, would this this be similar to what you would pick?

Also, the warranty upgrade is going to be added, would be silly not to I think.

Cheers

For 1080p gaming the above setup will cope for a couple of years no problems. I'm sure at some point we will need more power even for 1080p but certainly on your budget you cant get much more performance. In any case, you cant get much more performance than a 780ti without going a bit silly money wise.

The one saving grace (even should you ever opt for 4k gaming) is that you can upgrade the GPU very easily. In the next couple of years (I think it will take that long before 4k gaming get anything like mainstream) you will be able to pick up a 990ti (or whatever) and get decent single card 4k performance.

But no, what I picked is what I would buy for the budget, always is when im speccing stuff for people.
