A good spec for a £1,000 gaming PC?

Hi guys

After an experiment with a gaming laptop from HP, I'm ready to return to the real world and get a proper desktop. (In fairness, the HDX9200 treated us well for four years, taking plenty of punishment from me and the kids - but the graphics card has finally given up the ghost.) I wanted to spend about a grand, including a monitor; but as always I got greedy on the spec and have convinced myself to spend £1,000 on the PC and just use an old monitor we have lying around...

Its main use will be for my games, such as Skyrim, Deus Ex HR and the like. I'm used to playing these on low-to-mid settings, and the spec below should be a real step up from that. Since I don't upgrade the PC all that often, I want something that will last a while before becoming outdated, hence I'm willing to hit £1,000.

As it's been a while since I've configured a desktop, there's quite a few things I'm unsure about. Any advice would be very much appreciated! In particular:

1) I'm completely lost with motherboards these days. I've gone for the cheapest option, but is that a false economy?

2) With my last two computers, I had Nvidia GPUs but on numerous occasions driver updates caused problems. So I felt like trying ATI for the first time. But I'm not familiar with the ATI cards, so don't really appreciate the difference between them. Any thoughts on what's the best value? Or should I return to the Nvidia fold?

3) I'm really tempted to try a solid state drive for the OS, with the HDD used to store my Steam files. But is it worth the extra cost?

4) 450W feels adequate as a power supply for what I'm after here, and I doubt I'll ever add a second graphics card. That seems ok, right?

5) I've got homeplugs already for the router and our TV, but they're a different brand (TP-Link, I think) from the ones at PCS. I presume given encryption etc they won't be compatible, so I need to find another TP-Link elsewhere?

Sorry, that's a bit of an essay. I'll stop now and post the spec...!

Hi there, I'll try to answer the questions the best I can.

1) The motherboard I have chosen is a low-end but good motherboard.

2)Usually the most bang for ya buck are the AMD cards as their cheaper than most nvidia apart from the high end. I've chosen quite a decent card for your price range.

3)Well it depends to the individual to be honest, some say its an enthusiast piece of hardware and others can't live with out it. It gives you faster boot times to start up the PC and quick application load times. Loading screens saved on the SSD are shorter. I would recommend looking at vids on youtube and decide whether it is worth it. I would post some links but I can't go on to youtube atm >.<". However your budget can afford to have one :)

4) If your not going to Xfire in the future then there is no need to get a larger power supply

5) Not sure on this one! I would assume they would work? Don't quote me on that lool :D

Here's a build you can fiddle around with. I've kept the peripherals the same as I assume they are the ones you want.

Unless your going to be playing blu-rays use the 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM. I gave you a better GPU with a better PSU, down grade it to 450W if you want. I gave you a better case. I downgraded the mouse, keyboard and speakers but there is a small difference. Dont buy norton. There are plenty of free anti-virus software, someone on the forums can tell you that. I gave you a smaller but better SSD, 90GB should be enough space. Gave you a better 7850 aswell.

A bit over budget but the GTX 670 should max the games you mentioned. If you are not planning to SLI (add another card) then you can choose lower the PSU and motherboard but I'd stick with corsair.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. (And for not pointing out how out of date I am calling the AMD card ATI... )

@Swanky777: Thanks for the YouTube tip. I'm now caught between "this is just an expensive luxury" and "that's what I've always dreamed of..." Guess I'll toss a coin! Or just dump the SSD and use the money on some better memory etc as per rubensolo's spec

@liamnic2: Any reason for the case change suggestion? Or do you just prefer blue to red? ;)

I'll post the final ordered spec later when I've got my wife's clearance! (Her only comment so far is "isn't there a green coloured case that would go with our lounge?" so I'm not expecting much input there...!)
