A little help with a 4k question, please?

Morning All,

Thanks for the help in advance on this.

So I recently bought the following new PC:

CaseTHERMALTAKE V200 TEMPERED GLASS RGB EDITION GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)Intel® Core™ i7 Six Core Processor i7-8700k (3.7GHz) 12MB Cache

Power SupplyCORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS-650 POWER SUPPLY
Power Cable1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor CoolingCorsair H60 2018 Hydro Cooler w/ PCS Ultra Quiet Fans

This scores around 9300 on the 3dmark TimeSpy test, which is about double my previous PC which I've recently sold to a friend so he can get into PC gaming himself.

Anyway, with my new PC in tow I thought, hell, shall I get a 4k Monitor? So I did, I bought the Asus VP28UQG which is a 4k 60hz monitor.

In the couple of days before my Monitor arrived, I played a few games on my old 1920x1080 monitor and was running literally everything in ultra/full settings at around 100-130+ FPS. Which obviously I was happy with.

When the new monitor arrived, I got everything connected. I booted up CoD BO4 and was a little shocked, probably due to now naive I am, at the dramatic drop in frames. So in full settings I ended up with between 35 and 60 (at a push) FPS. I ended up dropping the settings to the 'optimal' ones now highlighted by Nvidia Experience (which is a mix of medium/some high) and I get around 55-70 (at a push) Fps.

Is this normal? Was I naive to think I was going to be able to 4k game in higher settings?

To be honest, after googling it does seem that 4k Gaming in high/full settings is a thing of machines built on insane budgets (I read an article about someone trying to get their system to his 144hz 4k gaming and the only games they were truly able to reach that on were nearly half a decade and in some cases a decade old)

Should I just be happy with the higher resolution and the drop in frames and crack on?

I should say, though, I can obviously still play some in full settings at 4k; Path of Exile runs amazing at constant 60 with vsync on, Apex Legend is a 55-60 game which is fine at full settings. Metro Exodus is the one solo player game I was looking to play on the new PC and the frames on that at full settings is 35-40, so I'm quite gutted, but also, I realise my PC isn't the BEST out there and I should just be happy, right?

Anyway, the reason I'm posting in the Tech help section is that I just wanted to see whether there is anything I need to do specifically with a 4k monitor? Any software I should download? Drivers? As at first I was worried I'd somehow messed up the 'installation', but after googling I double checked frame rate setting etc and all seemed fine.

Thanks in advance guys and gals and please try to be nice about naive I might have been :D

Cheers

Hey there. Unfortunately this is the way it works. 4k is effectively 4x the pixels that your system needs to generate. If you think about that logically, you end up with 1/4 of the performance. It doesn't quite work out like that, as there are processes involved that mitigate some of the drop, but it's not going to be far off for a rule of thumb (As you have noticed).

The 2070 is generally considered inadequate for 4k. It's almost there, are you are seeing, which puts it in a very strange position market wise. You really need to look at a 2080 for decent 4k gaming at high settings with the 2080Ti being the current optimum.

If you can return the PC you should maybe consider it as there are better options for the money you have spent.

Yeah, 2070 is not powerful enough for 4K without reducing settings drastically which kind of defeats the object. Whilst a 2080 may just about manage 4K, it really needs to be a 2080ti for a proper experience.

Hey Guys

Thanks for the response, I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know if PC Specialist would allow for a return on the grounds that an upgraded 2080 will be purchased?

Thanks in advance

Depends how long you’ve had it, but maybe worth trying.

How long have you had it? If its within 14 days then you can return regardless. If it's over that time then it may be possible but it would be at PCS disgression.

I've had it about 5 days.

My only issue would be that I've paid for it via finance; I'm just hoping the cancellation of finance wouldn't affect my credit rating enough to make me unable to get credit the second time

I've emailed PC Specialist now.

Just out of interest, what would you change on the computer? My budget isn't MUCH higher than what I spent (1600) but I would be interested in adding the 2080ti. I know it's a lot more money, but it's actually a safebet to be more than capable for 4+ years.

Thanks in advance

Not really, you can get a decent 4k gaming PC for ~£1500 or so, depending how you balance it. An AMD R5 CPU based system would have made more sense than an Intel i7. And you overspent massively on the mobo.

If you're within 14 days you're within your rights to cancel for a refund afaik.

Something like this would make sense for 4k:

Case
FRACTAL FOCUS G BLACK GAMING CASE (Window)

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six Core CPU (3.4GHz-3.9GHz/19MB CACHE/AM4)

I would ideally say the R5 2600x CPU and X470 Ultra Gaming mobo, but the above is fine.

And if too expensive you can switch to the RTX 2080 which will get you a fair bit further at 4k than the 2070. And is ~£300 cheaper.

It’ll be fine to cancel then. TBH, I’d wait for 7th July when AMD zen 2 Ryzen 3000 cpus are being released along with new motherboards. Buying an Intel now is just a really bad idea. Their performance is gradually being eroded as windows fixes have to be applied to mitigate the security issues on them. Currently it’s about a 20% performance hit. They’re also expensive for what they are. The new amd’s are set to beat them for less money and hopefully better thermals.

1) That's largely irrelevant to you since your monitor is 60hz therefore anything above 60hz is pointless.

Path of Exile runs amazing at constant 60 with vsync on

As mentioned in your other post, you should look at using "Freesync" (gsync compatible mode) with this monitor.

There is an argument for not waiting for the Zen 2 CPUs. Rumours are the X570 mobos won't be cheap, but rather will cast as much as the higher end Intel boards. And the 2000 series CPUs have seen a price cut while the 3000 series will, presumably, launch at normal prices. Depends how much the OP is willing to pay in total and how much they want a 2080 ti over a 2080 I guess. :)

I would probably beef up the PSU to the 750 RMx but other than that the build suggested is about as good as you will get for the budget. I would be nervous with a 2080ti at full choke on 650w, even with the Corsair branding attached :D

I wouldn't be nervous about a 2080 ti on 650W PSU tbh. 280W on torture load, with an apparent absolute peak of 360W:
I don't see what's using the other ~300W. :)

There's always a good case for the RMx PSUs ofc, I just wouldn't be nervous about it.

Firstly thank you all for your responses I really appreciate it.

The system you've priced up, Oussebon, is well within my budget. In fact I can actually save money by removing the OS as I already have a code that my family own. If I saved the money from that, and added the 2600x and x470, the price is essentially the same.

Would this system be able to run 4k in the higher settings then?

I'm tempted to return the other computer and hopefully order this one, but I've noticed a few of you have mentioned the new AMD products coming out, is it really worth me waiting for them? Do we have any idea on the price of them at the minute?

FYI, I can add the 750w Power Supply at barely any additional cost, to basically deal with any worries.

Thanks for all your help honestly I really appreciate it

Cheers

Also I would much rather have the 2080ti over the 2080.. and would this be the better decision in terms of ways to spend money over getting the 2080 and the new AMD products?

Thanks!

See my comments above. The CPUs will be technically in the same price ranges as the current ones, but in reality will be a bit more expensive than the current ones are most likely due to the current gen seeming to have had its prices cut as stocks are cleared.
We don';t know about the mobos but they are likely to be more expensive than the cheaper B450/X470 mobos currently are:

For 4k gaming the 2080 ti is very highly desirable. If it cost you the -ti, I'm not sure it'd be worth it for your uses.

The new CPUs will be compatible with current gen motherboards (apart from A320). So there may be options like an X470 mobo + Zen 2 CPU. Depends what PCS end up offering.

Thanks, essentially nothing really matters now until I hear back regarding my ability to withdraw from the finance agreement OR move the finance over to cover a new product. I'm hopeful I am able to do the latter (and pay the extra direct to PCS).

I'll report back soon, thanks a lot :)

Hi All,

Thanks again for all your help with this, I really appreciate it.

I managed to arrange the refund with PC Specialist and had the Finance Cancelled. I am basically ready to order again, and I just wanted to check with you all whether or not the new AMD hardware discussed above had a) come out and b) made a difference re: the system that you would recommend I buy to be ready to 4k in Ultra settings?

Happy to answer any questions, and once again thanks for the help in advance,

Best wishes

Oliver

So it's a PC to game at 4k on this monitor: VP28UQG (yes?)

Remind us of the budget? :)

Evening! That's the monitor, yep

Budget is around the same price that you priced up earlier in this thread, but realistically anything where the finance would be between £40 an £50 a month :)

Thanks in advance,

Oli

I should probably add, also, that it's to game in Ultra settings, but I think we covered that a few posts up.

Essentially, I buy a PC every 4-5 years with the hope that it can last the full distance. If I have to go above the price above, then I will :)
