Personally I prefer a rucksack type as the laptops a lot more secure and more comfortable to carry.

But I also have one of these as a spare and it certainly seems fairly sturdy, its only used rarely but after 4 years it still looks as new.

If you want a laptop backpack go for Swissgear stuff.

For a messenger style bag Targus seems to your best option like the one Finn linked.

I have got a 17.3" Vortex III and found the Targus XL City Gear too small for the laptop to fit. I then tried this Belkin messenger bag http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Messenger-Bag-Laptops-17/dp/B000XHRJAO after reading lots of the reviewers saying their 17.3" computer fitted perfectly... I could get the laptop in that one but it is a very tight fit, and once you have the charger in there is little space for anything else. I would like a backpack, probably a Swissgear, but are any of these actually big enough? Any 17.3" Vortex III owners out there with a spacious backpack that they are happy with?

Id suggest getting a sleeve for the laptop its self and then using your favourite bag at least thats what I did in my laptop days, and what I will be doing a 15'6 laptop fits in most over the shoulder and backpacks
