Advice on a new PC

Hi Guys, My Compaq presario desktop PC bought when mobile phones were the size of house bricks is finally dying. When you get off the floor and stop laughing I could really use some help. I would like a new desktop mainly for general home use, surfing, music cd's,film dvd's etc. The only games i used to play were fsx & truck sims. To play them again would be nice but not essential. As stated, It would be mainly for general home use. I guess a new monitor would be in the mix as well. My budget would be around £1500 but could stretch to £2000 at a push. I wouldn't know where to start with regards to components. Thanks.

If those are your uses I don't think you need to spend that much, or would even necessarily benefit much from doing so.

You could go for something like the ENIGMA X02: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/251/ for £1029 and a 24" 1080p monitor (if you don't already have one) for about £120.

This would do very well for all of your uses above, including the simulators.

No, you're quite right, it doesn't have a DVD player. It's a "review" spec which is a fixed configuration but with a fairly substantial discount. But it means you can't change the spec.

You've got 3 options

1) add your own DVD player, that you buy or pulled from your old system

2) Buy a USB DVD player which you can buy with the system

It's just as good as an internal one. I often have one sat on top of my case

3) Phone PC Specialist and ask if they can add an internal DVD drive to the order.
While they can't change components, they might be able to add extra parts on request. Seeing as they also sell the parts as upgrades anyway. :)

You may also in time find it's better to rip CDs and DVDs into digital formats, and then you can play them without needing to insert the discs. You can rip them in lossless formats so that you don't lose any of the fidelity. Another advantage of digitising your media collection is that you can stream it to other devices in the house - other computers, a smart TV, tablet, phone, etc.
