Advice on High-Performance PC Build for Creative Work

Hello everyone,

Following the advice I received in my previous thread and the insightful reading recommended by Scott, amazing work by the way, I'm back to seek further guidance for my high-performance PC build because I want to make certain I chose the right system for my needs, I previously wanted a desktop which would be more powerful but a laptop also seems like a good option due to portability and my Uni work. I am struggling to weigh all the pros and cons and would really appreciate if someone could help me come up with a new spec.

I would firstly like to note that this is my first custom PC build and other than having the base knowledge when it comes to components I am a beginner and do not know a great deal on how all the parts work together to create a optimised system. I have ADHD so keeping track off all the different factors to take into account is rather difficulty especially since this a high spec system we are talking about so high stakes. Any help whatsoever would be so appreciated.

Monitor: Currently, I have a 49" Odyssey Neo G9 DQHD Quantum Mini-LED Gaming Monitor. I'm open to getting a new dedicated 4K monitor however that I would use in a separate workspace with which ever chosen system if needed and my budget for a new monitor is £800.

Uses: The primary use of this system will be for my Uni work and prospects after Uni which would typically include, 3D modelling with Blender, and Unreal Engine 5 as well as other heavily processing software's, However I also want it to handle any game I through at it. I need a setup that can handle intensive graphic work smoothly.

Max Budget: My maximum budget for this build is £4800 (Including the £800 budget for the monitor).

I would appreciate your insights on the following:

  1. CPU Choice: Given my needs, would you recommend AMD or Intel? I'm looking for a balance between gaming performance and the ability to handle 3D software efficiently.
  2. Motherboard and RAM: What are the best options for a DDR5 motherboard and RAM that would complement the chosen CPU?
  3. GPU: Which GPU would you recommend that aligns with my monitor's capabilities and my workload?
  4. Storage Configuration: Suggestions for an optimal storage setup that balances performance and good storage habits. Please keep in mind that storage for me right now isn't a deal breaker as I can always upgrade in the future however I do want a minimum of an overall 8tb SSD.
  5. PSU and Cooling Solutions: What PSU and cooling system would be suitable for such a build?
  6. Case and Wireless Options: Any case recommendations? Also, if there's a need for wireless options, what should I consider?

Here is the Desktop build I created a while ago on PC Specialist however that quote is now expired.

Final thoughts:
As of recent I have went back to the idea of getting a Desktop system instead, as mentioned by Scott I could use a standard laptop to remote access to the desktop using Moonlight or sunshine. As you can see from the specs of these previous build drafts you can see that I tend to go for the dearest/best option possible which I know isn't always the best thing to do.

If you were in my shoes what high spec desktop would you create for my Student and future creative media work taking all the above into consideration?

I'm open to any suggestions and would highly appreciate your expertise in these matters. A big thank you to Scott for the foundational advice and to the community for your continued support.

Looking forward to your responses!

P.S I could not attach the quote PDF's as it's not a supported format for some reason so I have attached them as separate PNG pages instead if this is helpful at all, however a new quote is the gaol here and looking very forward to working with you on this. If you have any questions whatso please let me know.

Best regard,
Jon F

With £4k to spend you can have it all regardless of your uses to be honest.

Below is where I land. With regards to the monitor I think you've got the best of both worlds already TBH. You don't need to go crazy with a secondary monitor but the likes of the Proart would be a good choice.

Yeah, which ever PC I go for should be more than capable, I just included the budget and use cases because it was part of the recommendations from your 'Collaboration of useful hints' thread.

To be honest I do really love my current monitor because it's wide and acts as 2 monitors already as well as being incredibly immersive for gaming however its not full 4k and with the Asus Pro Art 32 I can be guaranteed more colour accuracy which will definitely come in handy when I do more VFX work etc, so I am pretty fixated on getting it to situate on the large desk I have most likely next to my current, I know, its going to be taking a lot of space though unless I can place it above the widescreen.

I like the look of you're spec, do you know what the equivalent would be for an intel version, I know there are a lot of factors to consider, I am going to start my latest desktop spec/quote and post in here shortly to see what people think (is that a good idea), as my last one was quite a while ago and I am planning on making a final quote and purchasing in the coming weeks. Thank you for your speedy response too.

P.S I love the minimalistic look of the Fractal Define 7 XL Black Quiet Tower Case, would you recommend this for my build?

Hi, I have just looked into some more builds and here are the 2 I have came up with. Please can someone help me optimise this or give me their thoughts on these setups so I can make an informed decision weather or not to go ahead with one of these PC's.

Here would be my Intel Version:

I have never own any AMD systems before, does anyone have any thoughts on these specs and which one would maybe suit me better.

Thank you.

I wouldn't touch Intel with a barge pole to be honest. Check out their efficiency ratings and heat dissipation issues, they're a nightmare. They are also EOL on that platform with no future upgrades available. With the AM5 system you will get a couple of generations worth of CPU upgrades.

The Define 7 XL is a great case. Be mindful of it's size though as it's enormous. The 5000X is a very pretty case, it really looks the part.

I have never own any AMD systems before, does anyone have any thoughts on these specs and which one would maybe suit me better.

Thank you.

You've not improved the latter one from what I had suggested, you've actually made it worse in a number of ways. It's difficult to give advice without understanding how you are coming up with the selections you are making. Hitting the top option in the drop downs is a very bad idea.

RAM, Storage, PSU Paste are all sub-optimal. You're going for a very high end system yet need a technician to set it up? This doesn't suit well with someone who is taking up technology in university, in one side of the coin I think you might be going down the wrong path.

I'll leave it here though, my advice previously still stands, along with the adage of the Intel comment above. I'm sure you will end up with a monster system regardless of your selections :)

Thank you for the advice, that's really useful. About the technician assisted installation, I do have my reasons for that, a few years ago (before I was serious about my career path) I had another high end PC that was I believe to be damaged in transit as the graphics card bracket had broke and was causing it to not work properly and they ultimately blamed me from when I had sent it to a third party to sell, so it was hard to tell what had happened, it was a nightmare of a situation where I had to sell the PC and lost a lot of money from the whole ordeal.

So this time (having a clear carer path) despite me not necessarily needing a technician to install it I just want peace of mind that it is all in working order and fully operation after the setup is complete (So I am fine with spending slightly more to guarantee that, but yes I know how it may look). Yes being in my second year of my degree for Animation and VFX (Creative Media) does mean I should know more about the technical aspects of computing however when it comes to that I am not that technically minded and prefer to use my creative skills instead in software like Blender and Unreal so I mostly avoid anything to do with programming or though I am trying my best to learn about some programming and commuting as I know it will be extremely handy for me to know in my carer path. I just need a bit of guidance in terms of which system to choose being that it's a lot of money, as a result I have been taking my time but it is now coming to the day. And you have been extremely helpful, I am so glad I came across your post, thank you again for being so patient.

Lastly I just wanted to check on a couple things. On the latest quote I made I chosen the ASUS® ProArt X670E-CREATOR, does this or would this have any implication or advantage to me using the ASUS ProArt display PA279CV professional monitor with the PC, what is the difference of this Motherboard and the one you selected.

As per your advice I have amended the later quote slightly, I added more storage but kept the ProArt motherboard, please can you advise if you see this as a appropriate overall system or if I should change the motherboard back to your first advised ASUS® ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI.
