Assuming the £3k includes a monitor as you included that in your spec.... DON'T buy this as it's not optimal.

If it's mostly gaming then no point wasting money on a 6900xt.

If your photo editing is actually a bit more serious then up the ram to 32gb. Change the case to whatever you want. Change the 6800xt to a 3080 if you wish (I would).

Then spend £500 on something like this as a monitor:
Acer Nitro XV340CKP 34 inch UWQHD Ultrawide Gaming Monitor (IPS Panel, FreeSync, 144Hz, 1ms, HDR Ready, DP, HDMI, Height Adjustable, Black)

I agree with most of the above post, but the 5900X really needs the ROG Strix motherboard and I personally don’t think that the 6800XT does enough to justify it’s price point compared to the 3070.

Here’s what I’d do...

Case
CORSAIR CRYSTAL SERIES 680X RGB GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.8GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard

Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (4 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3070 - HDMI, DP
1st Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 256MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W)
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2000 MB/R, 1100 MB/W)

@SlimCini made a great shout with the monitor, the IPS panel should be great for both gaming and photo editing 👍

I'm not much of a mobo dude and I'm actually going to get a build like this myself this year... So genuinely what does the 5900x need the ROG Strix for exactly??

As a mobo layman, from what I've read the main differences between them are "the Strix has a POST code LED display; USB-C front panel header; a few more USB's and bios flashback button on the rear I/O panel and an 8x slot on the CPU.... If you can live without the small overclocking conveniences (Bios flashback/POST LED) there is no reason to choose this board over the Tuf as it will handle your CPU's power requirements without any difficulty."

If the STRIX is genuinely needed that's good to know as I'll need to know that too. I wanna know why though!

The ROG Strix has improved heat sinks and VRM. I’ve got the TUF X570 and it’s a great mid-range board but I wouldn’t personally want to put a twelve core processor in it and risk the dreaded thermal throttle.

Fair enough. Good to know.

What are the heat sinks like on the B550s?? Would you put a 5900x on any B550?

Edit. Knew that would get moderated

The Gigabyte AORUS is the B550 most likely to be able to cope with a Ryzen 9... but the real question is why would you choose B550 over X570? 😜

Because I'm trying to get this ratified by my boss (aka wife) and if I can show any sort of compromising thrift I'm less likely to spend Q1 and Q2 of 2021 in both lockdown and doghouse.

I'm yet to show her the extent and size of the G9 I want to hook it up to...

She's agreed to a pc desk in the living room (we don't have an office) on the proviso we get new flooring for the whole of the downstairs so that a pc desk matches it). Oooh she's a good tactician. I can respect that. Crafty. :cautious:
