Hello all,

Have about £1400 to spend on a gaming PC, majority time gaming, little editing and maybe streaming.

Been out the PC side of gaming for a very long time but put the below together, happy to hear if there is any changes to be made or savings.

Thanks in advance

Hiya, welcome back, hope the last system lasted well?

Could you let us know the make and model monitor you’re using?

Also what’s your maximum budget?

Intel are now the poor processors that you try to avoid, AMD are streets ahead generally.

Thanks, System lasted ages but then life happened and consoles just became easier.

I have about £1400, no peripherals at the moment so will need a monitor, mouse etc too but can use a slightly different budget.

What's your budget all in then? Reason being is it affects the build pairing with it.

Probably £1600-1700
This is where I'd be looking, includes keyboard and mouse. Have only added an OS and games SSD, you'll need likely a HDD for storage if you're doing editing stuff, was hoping you may have some around from your last PC, easy to carry over

This would be good for 1080p gaming (monitor suggestion below). It has a strong 8 core CPU that will help with the multithreaded loads. With AMD you gain significantly over intel with far lower power usage, plus far lower temps, so the motherboard, cooler and case don't have to be so premium to keep up with the cpu. They're just far better chips. The Nvidia card is good if you're using hardware acceleration in editing, plus is better for streaming off the gpu.

Then for a monitor, this is purely from the gaming perspective.

I'd strongly suggest getting a basic 4k 60Hz monitor (somewhere in the region of £150 to £200) down the line when funds are available, for productivity this will HUGELY improve the available real estate, and that kind of use doesn't benefit from high refresh rate.

Thank you,

So I'm best off having 2 SSDs? Stupid question but assuming I don't need to add a wifi card either?

I've got a £30 off code to, so could add the faster delivery lol

What about this one?

Deal: LG Electronics UltraGear Gaming Monitor 24GQ50F-B - 23.8 inch, VA Panel, 165Hz, 1ms MBR, 1920 x 1080 px, AMD FreeSync Premium, Gaming UI https://amzn.eu/d/bo6Alk4

Yea would get a second monitor too when.

As for HDD can I just use an external, I've got one of them.

The smaller on is for OS and programs.

Then you have a deviated on for games.

That way if you have to reinstall windows (which you will have to at various points) you don’t have to wipe your games drive, then when you’ve reinstalled windows and steam, just point the steam library to your games drive and it’s fully configured without you having to reinstall stuff.

Then HDDs are far better still for storage, reason being is that an SSd is working one minute and dead the next and when they fail, you have no chance of recovering anything. With an HDD they fail sector by sector and you usually have a few months warning to get a replacement drive and copy the data off before it packs in.

Stupid question but assuming I don't need to add a wifi card either?
WiFi is included on the motherboard

That’s a lesser VA panel whereas the one I linked is IPS. These days I wouldn’t go lower than IPS. VAs suffer from worse motion blur and poor colours compared to IPS.

Totally depends what speeds really. Personally I’d never use anything under USB3 or Thunderbolt, just too slow imho, but maybe fine for you.

Internal drives aren’t expensive though these days and far more reliable. On external drives, it’s rarely the drive that fails, rather the connector adapter board. They tend to burn out quite quick with any real use.

So should I just add a HDD to this build and do it all at once?

I'll make sure to look for that monitor then as it's a good price.

Thank you for all the help, gives me more confidence in buying.

If you have the budget, then sure. IMHO I wouldn't go lower than 2Tb, just doesn't work out very economical as the lower sizes sell in far lower quantities so are more expensive per Gb. In fact on PCS, the 2Tb is a WHOLE £2 more expensive than the 1Tb! Would take you to £1582 on the PC with a 2Tb Seagate 7200rpm drive.

Thank you for all the help, gives me more confidence in buying.
Real pleasure. It's a solid build.

You will get a notification telling you the lowest PSU wattage you can get away with, ignore it.. We're not designing the system with the current specs in mind, we're allowing for upgrades over a 10 year lifespan, so you want to allow yourself a good bit of headroom, especially for GPU upgrades. With a 850W PSU as specced and with current power draws, you'd be able to fit up to a 4080 Super just about.

No matter what GPU you get now, it's the first thing you'll need to upgrade in a few years to maintain performance. And everyone's budget over time changes, plus their requirements often change too, as well as wanting to level up to higher resolutions which makes a ginormous improvement for gaming. So you're allowing yourself headroom to significantly beef up your system should your needs and wants change in the future.

But on the AM5 AMD platform, you'll also have the option to upgrade the processor to future generations, so should you want more editing power, or an X3D chip for ultimate gaming performance, you'll be able to make a significant upgrade either way on that motherboard with the higher PSU.

I would probably swap out the 980 primary drive for the Solid P44. It has better write endurance, toss up on the speeds and to knock it off it's £20 cheaper.

It's the exact same model.

Although it's out of stock, only has a 30-day return window, and the condition is listed as:
Item In Excellent Condition - Supplied In Original Retail Box With Stand - The Item May Have Small Cosmetic Blemishes Such As Minor Marks
It's entirely up to you whether a 'not new' item with a short return window is worth the £30 saving.

It's all down to weather you trust the seller on an open market. Plus you won't get warranty with it, which personally I'd say was worth £30 easy.
