Appropriate Laptop Specifications

So I am looking to purchase a new laptop, currently I'm not sure between a windows or mac operating system!

However, I will need the laptop to carry out a lot of video editing, and therefore I need to know what specifications in a laptop I will need to be looking for

I have up to £800 to spend, and need to know which factors are most important when it comes to video editing such as which GPU and RAM is appropriate

Many thanks

CPU and RAM are the most important factors for video editing. For anything more than hobby editing you will want 16GB RAM and an i7 CPU. Its worth getting a half decent GPU if your software takes advantage of it to speed up editing, something like a 960m should be fine.

I'm looking for something portable as I will be editing on the go thats why I need a laptop

Definitely Windows then, you'd only be able to afford an entry level MacBook Air which is dual core i5 and 4gb RAM, performance would be dire.

Alright thanks buddy!

How much do you reckon i would be looking to spend on a laptop that will be able to edit videos, render videos fairly quickly? I would be using Adobe Premiere Pro or Sony Vegas
Bear in mind I have up to £800 budget
Thanks

You'd need the full £800 to get something fairly decent. I'm sure one of our guys will draw you up a PCS example to get an idea.

People will reply in this thread (I can't cos I know little about laptops :))

Alright thanks for clarifying this!
I will await then, also thanks to anyone else that has replied to this thread!
This is one of the best forums I've used in terms of quick & helpful responses :)

Say I was to purchase this build, if I was to render a 10 minute clip with no effects, and just raw footage using Adobe Premiere Pro, how long would you say this would take to render?
Also is the GPU heavily relied on when editing?

I was told this information I don't know if it is accurate

Storage
-----------------------------------------------------
I definitely recommend 1 TB hard drive
and an SSD with lower memory. You need a bit of space for storing videos,Images, and software

Find out more here http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001396.htm

GPU
-------------------------------------------------
Most software is more CPU intensive but I do know that Adobe Programs are made to make advantage of graphics cards to reduce render times.

So a GPU is not really that important unless you want to play games.

CPU
-------------------------------------------------
When you are looking for a CPU you are looking for A lot of cores more cores means less render times and more speed. Try looking for at least a quad core processor( 4 ) you can check on this website if you're not sure https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php just copy and paste the model into the search
look for newer i7s I5s and fx series above 8000

RAM
-------------------------------------------------
Random-Access-Memory is really important in this scenario

Look for at least 8 GB of ram try to get 16gb(DDR3) if possible

What do you think about this?

Hello thinking about buying a laptop with these specifications!

Processor Speed: Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ (2.6 GHz, up to 3.5 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
Hard Drive/SSD: 1TB+128GB
Screen Resolution: Full HD (1080p)
Memory: 16GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated)

How do you think this will perform?
I will be using it for video editing mostly therefore using programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and possibly Sony Vegas, so how do you think it will perform?
How well do you think it will do in terms of rendering? Rendering clips around 10 minutes?

Thanks a lot

If you can afford, you should look into the 17.3" Octane II as its the only laptop on the PCS websites that features Quadro GPUs. I don't really know much about them but they're described to be aimed towards professional, including "digital content creators". But that may be a little too extreme for your needs. Otherwise, what you have seems fine.

Not a clue about how long it would take, the GPU only helps when outputting specific file types with specific options. Generally its all about the CPU and for your budget the 6700HQ is about as much as you can get.

Nebula is probably the best you are going to get for that budget. It's a cracking build for the cash. 15" screen might be a bit of a squeeze but as long as you can run it at 1080p you'll be fine :)
