Best Spec for Rendering/editing Video

Hey,

I work for O2 headquarters and I am currently working as a film editor/filmer. We are in need of a desktop with fast rendering speeds.

We will be using the computer for editing videos and rendering them so a spec which compliments this is well appreciated.

Budget is around the £2000 mark.

We dont need a mouse/keyboard or screen.

Don't hesitate to contact me for more information.

Thanks
Anas

Do you know if the software you will be using takes advantage of CUDA cores in Nvidias GPU's? If it does you will want to spend a bit more on the GPU.

Here is what i would get in your position.

Case
COOLERMASTER CM690 MKII ADVANCED CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-3930K (3.2GHz) 12MB Cache Not much slower than the 3970x but much much cheaper i can't see any justification spending the money on the 2970x even if it is your employers
Motherboard
ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 1600MHz X.M.P(4 x 4GB KIT) Cant see you needing more than this
Graphics Card
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 670 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready Much more meaty GPU that the software can (if supported) take advantage of
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
240GB INTEL® 520 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
2nd Hard Disk
2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm) Don't know if you need this much sotrage, easy to upgrade to 4GB version, or stick in a 2nd drive if need be.

Well like I said hopefully someone who works in this area or has better knowledge will comment on it :) Thanks for correcting the build above :p.

A couple of thoughts:

* If you are going to put your corporate-standard Windows build on the machine than you won't need an OS from PCS. However, it would need to be Windows 7 (or maybe Vista - not sure) 64-bit Professional to support more than 16GB RAM.

* As it's for business use I assume we are talking about ex. VAT prices.

If so, you could get an extreme powerhouse for £2k. Here I've reinstated the 3970X, added 2 x 1TB Velociraptors in RAID 0 (obviously you need to back these up, but I assume you can easily automate that) and thrown in more and faster memory. I also suggest what I think is a sober but classy-looking case for a suitable-for-work kind of look - subjective, obviously.

Well if your not bothered about money as it's a budget you have been set then yeah i can see the above spec working out fairly well. I would however change a couple of things.

1. That memory is pointless, really 100% pointless stick with the 1600Mhz stuff as atleast that is stable. 2400Mhz will not only give you close to 0 performance gain in the real world it might be unstable and that would just suck.

2.The 3970x is about (at best) 10% faster so i can see how that will help you out. Normaly spending that much extra for such little performance is crazy but if your looking to squeeze everything from your pc then go for it ( have you considered an overclocke d version?) You can check it out here
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/intel-2011-overclocked/

3. The normal way of doing is to have a nice super fast SSD for holding your current projects, then transfering those onto a solid reliable HDD. Thus no need for 2 x 10,000 rpm drives in RAID. Unless you think you will need to use that extra space for editing from, in which case i would suggest an additional SSD or a larger single SSD as they blow even RAID velociraptors out of the water for speed - and you have 1/2 the chance of a failure meaning loss of data.

With that in mind, here is my full fat spec.

Case
ANTEC QUIET COMPUTING™ PERFORMANCE P280 CASE wrong case but yeah same price point
Overclocked CPU
Overclocked Intel® Six Core i7-3970X (3.5GHz @ max 4.8GHz) The overclock here will help out, as the overclock will be done by PCS it will be covered by their warranty
Motherboard
ASUS® P9X79 LE: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 1600MHz X.M.P(4 x 4GB KIT) As mentioned above, probably no point to the faster RAM, even this stuff is only really needed if you overclock otherwise 1333Mhz stuff is ample.
Graphics Card
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 680 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready Upgrade on the 670m, because the budget let me :p
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
480GB INTEL® 520 SERIES SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 550MB/sR | 520MB/sW) Perfect for editing loads of video at once, move to the caviar black one compleated.
2nd Hard Disk
2TB WD CAVIAR BLACK WD2002FAEX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (7200rpm)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive
24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Power Supply
CORSAIR 650W ENTHUSIAST SERIES™ TX650 V2-80 PLUS® BRONZE (£69)
Processor Cooling
Corsair H80 Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler (£69) Better cooling because of the overclock.
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9)
Sound Card
ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Facilities
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT - AS STANDARD ON ALL PCs

for your uses this is probably a slightly better machine than you posted in your own spec. Not much in it but i would say for your needs it wins it.

Agree, that is better.

Regarding the storage, as you say an SSD miles better in performance than any kind of HDD, in RAID 0 or otherwise, and far more reliable to boot. My thinking was that a single 480 GB SSD might not be big enough, and I couldn't see how to fit another one into the budget. But I guess 1 x 480 is plenty.
