Black screen first time running game

So I just tried to run a game with my new machine and the screen went black (computer was still running, but had to reboot to recover display). Check the event log and saw an Event 14 nvlddmkm red level error. GPU drivers were slightly out of date (june 2020) so updating them now, but a bit concerned by this error on a new build - as only time I have seen it before is when my old graphics card was on it's last legs. Rather return it now, if GPU is going to fail, but also rather not have to send back machine that's just arrived? Any advice? Thanks. Will post spec below..

You need to run Windows Update repeatedly too, until no more updates, are found.

I'm fully up to date on windows and on GPU drivers now.

The game was Prey (which is a few years old now). It ran ok when I tried it again just now, but when my old GPU died this happened intermittently.

I will give a go checking all the cables inside as you suggest. I'm pretty sure monitor and HDMI cable are ok, as they have just been transfered over from my old machine where they work fine. I only have HDMI cables to test.

I guess I will then wait and see if it happens again, and on a different game. My past experience makes me think this is a hardware issue - but hopefully not.
