black screen on start up

Hi,

Hope someone can help me with this:
I am getting a black screen after the windows logo on start up. I can get into the bios and the automatic recovery but nothing seems to fix it.
Using windows 8.1 64 bit

I have searched the internet and I have tried:
A different monitor
Using the integrated graphics card instead of external
System restore to a previous date
Starting in safe mode
Pressing the power button when disconnect to dissapate any stray charge

Also I have tried system refresh and reboot, both ask for an installation disk which I have but then claim it is invalid

Any help would be much appreciate, at this point I'deven be happy with a factory reset

Can you list the actual errors? For example what wording is used to say the disk is invalid. Does it refer to the CD 'Disk' or the HDD 'Disk'?

If its a PCS build then unless the CD is damaged you should just be able to pop the CD in and re install windows...

Any beeps from your motherboard, or any LED's illuminated on it?

The actual error is after the windows logo I get a completely black screen.

I hoped refreshing or "reseting" my PC would help, when I try and do this, it asks for the 'windows installation or recovery media', when I put the installation cd from pcspecialist in I get
"The media inserted is not valid. Try again"

When I try and just insert the CD at startup I again get the black screen after the windows logo, or if I disable all other boot options it goes to the "press any key" at the start of the install but when a key is pressed returns to the bios

There is no beeps from my moterboard, but there is a single green LED on in the bottom right, next to the connections for the ssd and hdd

Are you sure its the installation CD you're inserting and not the driver CD by mistake? You'll need to use your windows disc to try a recovery.

I am pretty sure. Its the only Microsoft CD that was in the pack I got with my PC (over a year ago). Looks like an installation disk, and as I said it starts the install but then cuts to the bios

Think steaky maybe right, have you got another disk available?

Before a reset anyway, I would try booting into safe mode (repeatedly press f8 when booting) see if it boots into that, if not you should at least see which driver it's loading and failing at.

I don't have another available. Is there a way to get one without purchasing a new copy of windows?

Safe mode gives me the same black screen after the windows logo. How would I see which driver it fails at?

Can you get into the bios? If you can see if you can change your boot order to boot from the CD first, then try your disc again (Although its odd that it starts the install then cuts to black screen/bios again).

Have you contacted PCS?

Already tried changing boot order. If I boot the CD first, it ignores it and goes to the black screen. If I set it so it is just the CD booting, nothing else, I get "press any key" (what google has told me I should expect here) except when I press a key it just goes to the bios

Not yet, was hoping someone would have had this black screen problem before. Will give them a call tomorrow (when I can next get at the PC)

Also tried installing the windows 8 setup onto a usb from another PC, but my product code is OEM and so cannot be used for this

What cable are you using to connect the monitor? I had almost the exact same symptoms for an issue I had and it turned out I had the wrong type of DVI cable. You could try connecting up the monitor via VGA or HDMI to either the graphics card or integrated graphics?

Usually use HDMI, tried VGA to check it wasn't that.

Called PCS they think its a problem with windows are sending me the file to burn to CD to reinstall.

Thanks for the help guys
