Browser problems

I took delivery of a new PC Specialist computer on Friday, really pleased with it. I am having a few issues when browsing, initially I requested Firefox as browser, as I was used to it, but they put Edge on. Anyway to cut a long story short I installed latest Firefox from its website. When booting up the browser opens up OK, but sometimes with just blank page while round mouse icon just spins, after a minute it may show the home page, if I shut browser down and re open it opens properly. This also happens occasionally again when using search box, which I have set as Google. I have tried Internet Explorer and the Edge and all seem to have same problem. It's a minor issue but a bit frustrating, closing the browser's and reopening usually sort it for a bit, my home page is just the BBC front page. The rest of the PC is great, with no problems, basic build

i5 CPU.....250 gd SSD......3 GB HD......8 GB memory..... 500watt power supply, No graphics card.....Standard CPU cooling.

ISP is Plusnet Fibre, who have been totally reliable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

What are you using to connect to the router? Are you using wireless in an area that might have poor signal (eg a number of walls in the way). A couple of things to try to locate where the issue originates is to try more browsers (eg Chrome and Opera) and to try another device using a similar router connection set up as the PC like being in the same position if on wireless.

Also run a test on speedtest.net and pingtest.net and let us know the results.

We love you Ukraine
Worth knowing that BT and PlusNet had outage on Friday and Saturday which caused connection issues to a lot of the Internet.

I did the following tests

Speedtest.net.....Ping 13ms.....Download 38.32....Upload....5.56

Ping Test

Packet test failed...it mentioned something about no Jave or Firewall blocking, Ping 12ms.....Jitter 0 ms.....Grabe B*

These results mean little to me except for the down and up speeds. The computer is connected to the router and BT Openreach modem by cable, all connected to the master socket right next to PC. This morning up to now it seems to be behaving, so it could have been Plusnet problems, although this did happen odd times on the old computer. No other computer in house to try, there is a ipad in regular use and a Nexus 7, and couple of smart phones, these all work fine.

Speedtest seems fine, those are more or less the same as what I get.

Have you tried a different browser or different device to try and recreate the problem there? And have you checked the performance tab on task manager whilst you are having issues? Is anything running at 100% or close, including the disks.

all task manger shows very low running use, ie not working well at all, edge works but can be a bit slow, Firefox best. I have noticed also that the longer the pc is on the more likely this is to occur, that could be wrong though, its just i think that may be the case. I am going to see if i can borrow neighbours laptop to test, thats a new Dell one running win 10, and i think Firefox. This is all getting a bit annoying now, beginning to think i may have been better to buy locally as at least i could take it back easy to check it out.

Have tried to borrow laptop, but its not available till mid week. Tried internet explorer, its far worse than Firefox with that, difficulty in opening anything at times. Edge does work but much slower that Firefox, and even that hangs at times trying to open a page or even search. Search engine i use is always Google. Checked out Plusnet and no issues showing, i cant see it a hardware problem, but am now at a loss what to do, for sure its no use like this.

That sounds like it could be DNS issues. To check you could try changing your DNS IP addresses to OpenDNS, the addresses are: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123.

If you're not sure how to change your DNS addresses just ask.

Now fingers crossed its sorted, i had a look at the Plusnet Technicolor router and BT Openreach modem, they were so hot. Since we had a total make over in the computer room they have been tucked in a corner behind the printer, the router sitting on top of the modem, i have moved them a bit now to get a better airflow, plus i did a reset on the router ( pin in reset button on back ). Since then its been fine. Before we re did the room both router and modem were vertically wall mounted, There both feeling less hot to touch now. I am keeping my fingers crossed. DNS issues is a bit beyond me, have no isea how to change them at all, hoping i dont have to now.

Odd, never heard of a router overheating, suppose it is possible. Hopefully that has somehow sorted it but if not, come back and we can let you know how to do a DNS test as the next possible solution.

Ah, that sounds like you've sorted it. :)
