Buying a New Laptop

Hi All

I have put the below spec together. Any thoughts on this. Main priority is high spec for CPU intensive tasks, portable and reasonable graphics/battery life. The optimus seems to meet these needs but any thoughts on other chassis or alternatives to the components is welcome. Looks like this CPU/Graphics card might be out of stock just now tho.

Thanks

What sort of cpu intensive tasks? Gaming involved?

I run engineering simulations for airflow its so computational intensive and runs parallel so all cores run flat out. Normally the simulations are run on desktop servers or cloud servers so this machine is just so I can work away from the office to setup and test models. Some software I use runs on windows directly and some linux so will be using virtualbox for the linux with windows 10 Pro OS. I have looked at the following 15.6 screen sizes ruling out the larger ones as too big for mobile use.

Octane - fastest using desktop based CPU but battery life short and too heavy to be reasonably portable.
Defiance III - seems significantly more expensive than Optimus but can't why
Proteus IV - a bit bigger/heavier, slower RAM than optimus,
VoyagerIII Pro - older gen processor and slower graphics, a little lighter
Cosmos XT - lighter but 6th gen processor and significantly slower RAM smaller RAM capacity, slower graphics

Optimus III - I chose this option of fastest mobile processor/RAM and good graphics

The vastly more powerful GPU will be why. If you're not gaming much, or rendering certain things that make use of the GPU, it's not a big deal for you obviously. The Defiance also has the older 6700HQ as standard, so upgrading to the new 7700HQ further ups the price.

Proteus IV - a bit bigger/heavier, slower RAM than optimus,
I'm not sure how much performance scaling you'd get off faster DDR4.

Not saying you shouldn't go with the Optimus, it seems appropriate for your needs and budget, just remarking that DDR4 frequency may not necessarily be a nail in the Proteus's coffin. :)

Hi All

I bought this laptop. Really please with it so far, good feel to it nice looking and very happy with performance running rhino 2D/3D CAD tools, virtual box, paraview visualization and engineering CFD calculations well. Previously used common branded high level laptops and this is definitely much better value.

Thanks for comments. Happy to answer any questions you might have of this machine.
