Cables for GPU

Evening all,

I’ve had this PC from PCspecialist for about a year now but one thing that always bugged me was the routing for the GPU cables, so tonight I finally played about with them (after gaining some inspiration after looking at some coloured cables), but when I actually unplugged the cables I noticed that there is cables attatched that aren’t actually plugged into anything and just cable tied around them self? Are they needed? See photos for reference.

The graphics card is a GeForce RTX 3060Ti and it has an 8 pin (6+2) connection.

Thanks

That's called daisy chaining where one cable serves 2 or more connectors.

That's standard on PCIe PSU cables, so one PCIe cable will usually have 1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 + 2pin

So in short, yes completely normal as your GPU doesn't require the extra input.

Thanks for the reply mate!

So if I was to get something like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reaper-Cab...t=&hvlocphy=1006644&hvtargid=pla-961440978607 would they still be compatible?

Those are extension cables, you would need to connect them to the end of your existing cable, and then into the GPU.

So as long as the cables have an 8 pin extension then it’s fine to use with my GPU even if my currently cable is 6+2?

Yep, you just plug the 6+2 into the 8 pin on the extension female end, and then the 8pin male into the GPU. Alternatively, depending on your PSU brand, you could get replacement cables that don't have the daisy chain setup, just a straight male to male, single cable. I was able to do this with my Corsair PSU for the same reasons you have: didn't like the way it was originally connected.
