CAD and Integrated versus Dedicated graphics

Hi folks.

I have a recoil 2 laptop with integrated UHD 630 graphics and also dedicated GTX 1060. The Autocad software I use refuses to use the dedicated card and uses the integrated which is driving me mental.

Googled around but all the guidance I find relates to desktops or disabling integrated in BIOS. Tried disabling integrated in BIOS but there isn't the option. Also tried setting up the software in Nvidia for dedicated but doesn't help, Tried right clicking and run with dedicated, doesn't work.

One guidance I noticed was to disable the UHD in Device Manager which I haven't tried, reluctant to do this in case it locks up the laptop and I lose all display, any suggestions?

Cheers

Dave

I have tired that link yes and I'm now on the final option which I'm cautious of trying. Running 2017. Yes integrated is definitely being used.

You can't disable the iGPU on laptops I believe, they are still used even when the dGPU is in use (apparently on a laptop the dGPU does the graphics processing and ships a sequence of still images to the iGPU which then displays them).

So the integrated graphic card is selected even with hardware acceleration ON?

I'm sorry I can't help you further, I have also seen is a common problem and most people just disable the integrated graphics in the BIOS, but if you can't then I don't really know.

That's what you do in a desktop, in a laptop the graphics is a little more complex (AFAIK) and only the iGPU is able to write to the screen.

@the OP, can you enable other applications to use the dGPU? If you can it'll likely be an Autocad issue I would think. Does Autocad have its own forum?

Ubusysa is spot on, as usual :) - the integrated handles some of the post-processing, including the actual job of shunting it to the screen.

This is a reasonable write-up: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasone...ables-intel-amd-nvidia-gpus-to-work-together/

Apparently Autodesk released a Hotfix for the 2016 and 2017 versions of Autocad to fix the issue. But it seems it's not working for OP. I would say to contact Pcspecialist support and ask them if you can disable the integrated GPU somehow, even though you'll lose some of that "cooperation" between the two GPUs.

I don't suppose forcing the app to use the Nvidia GPU via Nvidia Control Panel helps? Or is that what you meant by setting up the software?

Yes that's what I meant by setting up in the software. Issue still ongoing, such a shame as the main reason I opted for the better graphics card was for better cad performance.

Does the dedicated graphics card work for other things? e.g. if you download and run 3DMark Firestrike, assuming you're not a gamer yourself.

Did you contact PCS support?

If the dGPU works fine for other things but not CAD, have you tried CAD support?
