Cant connect wireless...Please Help

Hi, I got my computer yesterday, and was trying to set up the wireless, but after 3 tries i couldn't, it kept saying something about the encryption that it doesn't support.

but on the leaflet it says its supports wpa2 and that is what my wireless is encryted to.

please can anyone tell me what to do.

btw pcspecialist ROCKS..excellent service all the way

Hi and welcome to the forum.

In most cases the reason for this is that the key is not being entered correctly, sometimes it can be that although the right protocol is selected (WPA2) the encryption methods set on the card and router differ.

See encryption type:

Hi, thanks for the quick reply,
ive entered the right security key, because i had to connect my iphone via wireless on wednesday and used the same key and it connected me to the wireless.

when the dialog box comes up, it says it only supports wpa2 psk or something like that but on the leaflet it says it supports wpa2 aes which my one is. (i hope i got those abbreviations right..im a noob when it comes to these abbreviations)

also it says to choose the user manual to see what i can do and when i do click the user manual, nothing happens, it doesnt take me to another page where the manual is.. :(

Ok then thats why its not able to connect properly. I would attempt to make a manual connection using the network and sharing centre rather than selecting the network from the list.

when you create a manual connection you will be able to match up the protocol and encryption to the routers settings exactly.

Open up the network and sharing centre and click on manage wireless networks

Click add a new wireless network and to manually configure

Here i have selected WPA2 personal, your router may differ.

Once you have entered all your details and matched the protocol and encryption exactly it should now just connect whenever the machine is in range.

What modem/router and which ISP are you using? I found that Sky's D-Link routers work with AES but BT's Home Hub and Voyager routers only worked with TKIP.

If that doesn't help, there are two "tricks" that often work. Firstly, set everything up on the PC then reboot the router. Secondly, disable your PC's firewall until you get a connection.

@ Gorman - thankyou will try this and let you know how i get on...

@ pengipete - im using d-link from virgin media....if my manual connection doesnt work will definately try your method..thanks

hurray the manual connection worked although i had to change my other computers and iphone key too...dont know if i did it right because of that...but nonetheless ive got it to work...
