Champagne and Churchill

We're watching Royal Ascot (on TV naturally), and yes I am wearing a morning suit and top hat (which looks very much like a tee shirt and shorts with a straw hat), my wife is wearing something obscenely expensive from a well known designer (called Primark apparently). Anyway, we were discussing what size of champagne bottle to purchase when I came across this wonderful Churchill quote that I'd not heard before...

A magnum is the perfect size for two, especially if one of them isn't drinking.

sounds like man maths
Well yes, execpt the full quote (which I paraphrased) was...

A magnum is the perfect size for two gentlemen, especially if one if them isn't drinking.

That's not to suggest that Churchill was a feminist of course......

I love that the big bottle sizes are all named after biblical kings who had to have their lifespans massively inflated to make the Bible's chronology make sense. The long lived kings = the large bottles

I remember being so let down when I found that Magnum was the exception to this rule (poor magnum PI)

I agree. I always found it strange that the French, who typically acknowledge no other languages other than French, didn't choose French names for their champagne bottles, but Hebrew ones.
