Check this build. Looking for a power PC to give max FPS (hopefully 60+) on Arma 3 Ultra settings at 1080p between 120hz and 144hz.

if you're looking for 60+fps that CPU really is not needed at all, in my opinion, a waste I would change the CPU to a ryzen 7 3800x and upgrade GPU to 2070 super. that will give you at least around 150fps at max settings at 1080p depending on the games

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply. I know I'm going for a powerful CPU over GPU, but Arma is CPU intensive. Faster CPU, faster RAM and faster drive I think will make more of a difference than upgrading the GPU. At least, thats whay I've been told.

Well, currently it wouldn't be ideal unless you're playing only Arma 3 and nothing else. But a slight increase in ram and a drive won't drastically increase performance as much as GPU you need a CPU that won't bottleneck the GPU which the i9 won't but putting a better GPU and a slightly worse CPU is going to much more optimal. you want a balance in the build otherwise everything is out of sync and the i9 with 2060 super is super unbalanced

To know if this is a good spec for your needs or not, we need the following information:

- Maximum budget? Helps to know if there is any room to upgrade things

- Monitor to be used with this system? Resolution and refresh rate or make and model if unsure. Gaming systems are always specced according to the monitor

- Any other uses to take into account? Editing? Streaming? things like that

Let us know the above and we can advise appropriately

Hi Nursemorph,

Thanks for the reply.

Max budget is £2500 (ish). I'm using an LG Ultragear 27GL63T. IPS screen. 1920 x 1080 Full HD, 144Hz refresh. 1ms, Freesync/GSync. Not planning to go beyond Full HD resolution, was looking to max at that res.

Mainly games; Arma2, Arma3, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, Cities Skylines few older ones such as LoTRO, Eve. Not planning on streaming, but who knows?

I get what you are saying, but with CPU I want to stay with Intel rather than AMD. Might be able to stretch to a 2070 Super if I lose the additional case fans.

Not meaning to sound rude but your choices are wild to be frank. Even if absolutely set on Intel, the X299 chipset is HEDT and not in any way made for gaming. I understand how you can come to the conclusion that bigger is better but please believe me it's not the case at all.

If you are absolutely set on an Intel system, which isn't advised, I'll happily spec one up for you that will make your original choice look silly..... but if you're also willing to reason out then an AMD system, that will still knock spots off your first choice, would definitely be advised.

£2.5k buys you anything you want. At 1080p I genuinely think you should pocket at least £1k.

Let us know which way you want to go. Happy to help you spend or save money as you wish :)

Edit: here is a youtube vid from an expert group that most enthusiasts would endorse...

This is EXTREME high end 1080p gaming. It'll max out everything you want.... but you're paying for it when it isn't really necessary.

As above, you could get a 2070 Super and a 1440p monitor in the same build within your budget and it would knock spots off it for visual fidelity.

Thanks Scott, I had just logged on to ask if you could recommend a build. I'll take a look.

Hi Nursemorph, well, to underline my inexperience in these matters I thought I would save some cash by not going down the 1440p 144Hz road.
Also I wasn't sure whether Arma 3 would be better 1440p @ 60hz or 1080p @144hz?

But bottom line is I aleady have the monitor I mentioned which I believe won't display 1440p at that frequency?

What Arma3 system build for 1440p at 144Hz would you recommend that will max FPS (to 60+) at those settings?

Thanks

John

Godlike
I have a in 2070 Super in my main rig and that cant even play Arma 3 on ultra locked at 60fps.
That game is so badly optimised its untrue.

As above, the key with Arma 3 is going to be a good configuration of the display options. There are going to be so many things contributing to the low FPS that likely make no odds to the actual visuals. There are numerous games that have been poorly optimised AND with poor standard settings (ultra for example)

Hi Scott,

Thanks for all your suggestions, they've prompted me to do quite a bit of reading this past couple of days (bad, I know; a little knowledge and all that) but, having considered what I'm really buying the PC for, I'm convinced I would rather go Intel over AMD.
Top-end, either a i7-900K overclocked (which I know very little about) or a i9-900K.
On that point, are you likely to have any i7-900K's in stock in the near future?

If you do, that would free up some cash to maybe look at going down the 1440p/144Hz road at the same time.

Anyway, could I ask you to cast your eyes over the build below and see if you think its as wild as the others?

Thanks

John

We love you Ukraine
Also you do realise the 9700k and 9900k are old generation now? If you’re looking at intel the 10th gen would make more sense.
