Closed loop high spec gaming pc (Intel build) - suggestions welcome

Hi guys,

I had posted a build a while back and got some suggestions - namely not going open loop and changing to AMD. I have put together a build here that is still intel (higher clock speed is the reasoning...and the fact that most games won't use 10 cores anyway) as I'd rather not wait until the AMD chips can be ordered in 2 weeks time and it seems a minimal clock speed gain whilst having an uptick in cores that most games won't use. If I was to go AMD I'd have to wait for the 5950X as opposed to the 3900 which is what I'd probably get now if I were to go AMD (which I don't think I will for the aforementioned reasons).

I have replaced the 3090 with the 3080 from the sensible suggestions I received here.

I have replaced the open loop system with a closed loop.

Happy to receive any further advice but do bear in mind I want to get on the waiting list soon (today).

ok - EDIT time - I have seen that the AMD systems are quicker at lower temps...which probably means I get better longevity. I'm getting a few more FPS at higher clock speeds with Intel but I suppose I've got to ask; is it worth it? If it is worth it am I MASSIVELY missing out by not getting the new chips in 2 weeks? I'll probably be on a waiting list for that and the 3080 which means a mega wait....which I reaaaaaaalllly don't want. I'm happy to get a 3900XT if that'll do. Anyway, second build with AMD below the first

Ok....I will go down the AMD route and also save myself a few quid (i.e. the bottom build); am I being completely silly NOT waiting for 05/11/2020 and the new chips? I'm not likely to bottle neck until I upgrade in years anyway am I? I won't overlook the voices of reason I've seen here over the past few weeks...but would like a really good argument that means I should wait for the new 5nm chips and additional cost+wait incurred.

Also any thoughts on the actual build?

I'm not the person to ask about whether the new chips are worth it...however, personally, I'd wait for the sake of 2 weeks (given you have a 3080 in your build, it is entirely possible that it will be held up by the graphics card rather than the CPU (guess it depends how AMD handle stocks etc) anyway)

Regarding the propsed build:

- Motherboard: You want the Strix X570 variant as it has more VRMs to allow the chip to get to the maximum
- Cooler: You want the H115i RGB Platinum....newer cooler which is more effective at removing the heat. It is only £3 more for a better cooler. You can, however, save £9 by dropping the Thermal Paste option....the high-end Corsair coolers comes with paste pre-applied by Corsair so it doesn't need any more. Net gain of £6!!
ALL ABOUT THE NET GAIN!!!! I think I'll get the 3900XT and then just ask them to upgrade to the 5900 if it doesn't get the 3080 in time. i.e. if it gets to 05/11/2020 and it's not available I'll get it upgraded.

Rumours are that Nvidia are planning to put out a lot of 3080s towards the end of this month, so if you're ordering in the next few days, you may well reach the building stage around the time the chips come out.

I would personally hold off. I would select the 3900X just now and opt for the 5900X as soon as it's an option.

FWIW I don't think you'll see much gains (if any) over the 3800XT/5800X. There are some games that will use it. If FS2020 is your bag then it's maybe worth a punt as it becomes more mature, other than that though you're looking at strategy/turn based games to have any real impact over the 8 cores 16 threads.

I've been told that I'm likely to get built end of november as waiting lists stand. So I've put my order in and been told I can amend it for the release on 05/11 for the new CPU's. If I'm built before then:

a) I'll be happy it got built so quickly!
b) I doubt, for my gaming needs, I'll be held back. If I am I can always pony up for an upgrade.

I got the 3900XT as per your helpful suggestions....unless, of course, I'm not built by 05/11 then I'll get the 5950

I know some of you may consider it madness...but c’est la vie

You won't want the 5950x, it's not a gaming CPU and will have lower clocks than the 5900x. It will actually perform worse for games as games use single core clocks.

If there are any suggestions for an awesome monitor for no more than 1k that’d be great! I know there is an asus rog 34” curved pcs have (but are out of stock) that I love the look of. I know there’s been a super widescreen suggested but I don’t want to go beyond 34” really. Hit me with your suggestions!
