COD4 PC Problems.

Hello PCSpecialist, long time no see.

A couple of months ago I bought a PC from you guys, everything with the PC it's self is PERFECT, I couldn't ask for anything better.. Except for one thing.

I have two copies of Call Of Duty 4, a Steam copy and a retail copy.

I uninstalled the Steam version due to me constantly getting kicked out of servers for some sort of problem to do with Steam. I researched the problem and noticed other people had also this problem, so I went out and bought the retailed version.

After uninstalling the Steam version, I put the retail copy into my PC and it comes up with the ordinary menu just as you do with any regular PC game before installing it, BUT when uninstalled it had two tabs.

"Play Single player"
"Play Multiplayer

And there is also an uninstall tab. When I click any of the tabs, the menu automatically closes. Help will be appreciated. :)

So you've already un-installed it, but the tabs remain?

EDIT*

Don't suppose you could put on some screenshots?

Welcome back. :)

It could be that a registry entry has been left over from the previous installation via Steam so try running a free registry scan with CCleaner and make sure all traces of the old install are deleted under program files.

And also, I uninstalled Steam, so I'm guessing I can't do it? :(

If you have uninstalled the game and they are still showing then just right click on them and hit delete and did you do a restart after uninstalling ?

Right, I uninstalled all my games off Steam including the actual client. (I only downloaded a few games.)

It was a couple of days ago now that I deleted the Steam copies, and I've kept continuously trying the retailed version, still no difference.

Nope, I don't believe so anyway.. I've searched but I couldn't find anything referring to "Call of Duty".

I would have thought that this will be to do with the game not being uninstalled correctly. As for it not working through Steam it would normally be a problem with the steam overlay which you can turn off or with punkbuster which needs to be manually updated by going to their website and running the manual punkbuster update.

As for the problem you have now, i would explore the dvd and find the setup.exe program or similar (....dont have the game) on the dvd and instead of using the autoplay function of the dvd go into the installation menu this way. Then either choose to uninstall again or if feeling lucky install again and this time it should work. I found this thread which sounds like a similar problem. http://forums.filefront.com/cod4-problems-errors-help/347113-cod4-uninstall-install-problems.html
If it is still saying play the game on the autoplay menu when the dvd is in then there is still some part of the game in the registry; or a folder on the pc with parts of call of duty still on it. You can manually edit the reg. but doing this should also work. Make sure there is no firewall blocking the game if you have problems playing it once installed and if you still cant get it installed post back. Most other errors kicking you out of the games are problems with punkbuster or the steam overlay.

If you have uninstalled steam correctly using add/remove programs then there should be nothing remaining but it might be worth doing a search of your pc (using the search function rather than manually searching) for steam to see if anything remains. Also check My documents folder for other random things that get saved...they shouldnt cause a problem but you never know.

Ok so you have uninstalled both and you still have the icons on the desktop so just right click on the icons and delete them and then try reinstalling the game and it should create some new icons.

I cant see the screenshot or notification you posted up mate, need to see that to see what is going on :) When you said you found the file.....what file? It is just setup.exe you are looking for on your retail cd and then you double click that and it should let you install freshly (rather than coming up with the play game option when its not installed) if that is the problem...If there is an error message coming up in the middle of the installation then we need to see it; really.

PS: For your information, the "Windows can't find this file" window is from when I attempt to open the file that the installation asks.

As far as Im aware this is due to the installation program and the multiplayer needing administrators rights to install or to be played; although it seems strange it is doing it from a retail dvd :(. Have you tried running the installation program as an administrator? I.e. right click on setup.exe and then run as administrator. Also try to look for a temp directory in your documents and settings and clearing this out. Before attempting to install make sure there are NO background programs running. This thread is from the activision forums, and it looks like you are not alone in this error. Basically this is telling you to shut down other programs....most games install fine with other things running but this may be different. If you are running in vista run the install program in windows xp compatibility mode. Thread is here; any more problems send an error report to Activision and include all your system info: https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=19483&p_created=1194397651&p_sid=dLBE1qwk&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_srch=1&p_lva=15402&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjMsMjMmcF9wcm9kcz0xLDYyMyZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9Mi42MjMmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWVycm9yIDEzMDU!&p_li=&p_topview=1

Yep, i've run as an admin twice now.
I'm about to go and follow the steps, and while i'm attempting to install i'm going to watch some TV. Wish me luck! ;)

I'm back! With no good news :(

I've completed all the steps, and I'm running Windows 7 64bit. Guess my last resort now is to consult Activision :(.
