Confused... CPU

After being really happy with my laptop from PC Specialist I’ve been pricing up desktops.

The new Intel processors have confused me today though. It appears the i3-8350k is better than the i5-7600 in every way. Can anyone confirm this theory please?

Primary aim games... currently GW2 which is CPU bound.

Many thanks

If we're really splitting hairs, the i5 7600 can boost to 4.1GHz (at least on one thread) up from its base of 3.5GHz, while the i3 8350k is at 4GHz with no boost.

However, the new i3 is a quad core, like the 7600, has more L3 cache (which seems to help in gaming) and I guess is unlocked so could be OCed.

The new CPUs are only available with the Z370 motherboards as the lower end chipsets haven't been released yet (and aren't expected until 2018). So the motherboards will be more expensive. However, the new i3 itself should be cheaper than the older i5.

Therefore a system with a i3 8350k and a Z370 motherboard should slightly outperform an i5 7600 + H110M-R in games, while also being open to overclocking, and having a better motherboard with more upgrade options.

What's your budget for the desktop (do you need a monitor within that budget?) and what exactly will you be using it for? Just games, with mostly GW2?

Hi

Thanks for your informative response.

The budget is £1200 with no need for a monitor etc, just the stack.

I’m not fussed about how good the stack looks either. The purpose would be only for games. I’m currently highly invested in GW2 which is very CPU hungry and am likely to have a play on Destiny 2 at some stage. I’m not looking to play VR and would like 16gb of RAM, nvidia GPU, Intel CPU, no need for a big HD so would take speed over size.

Thanks again

Since GW2 is supposed to like strong single threaded performance, an overclocked system makes sense. It may well also like fast RAM.
