Cooling stands for Optimus IV?

I suggest you make your own for cheapness.

My Inspiron 1520 uses a similar cooling method to the Optimus IV, basically air is sucked in from underneath and blasted across the two radiators and out of the chassis.

For this I just use a simple piece of thin-ish plywood that has been lacquered black. Effectively it's the same as using it on a desk.

Although doing it this way you can customise it for however you want to use it and what you want to use it for.

Couple of ideas:

On the laptop board, drill a few 10mm vent holes where the fan sits to allow for better airflow if it's sat on your lap. If the holes on the board are covered the air will flow in from underneath the laptop.

You could even make a hole big enough for a fan and sandwich that between another board, but make sure you leave enough space under the fan to allow air from between the two boards to reach the fan easily.

Damn, think I'm gonna draw one up in sketchup now. XD

@ Iroquois Pliskin - right Ill keep an eye out for anything in that sort of spec! thanks :)

@Pagey - Good idea! only problem is my DIY skills are not exactly great XD but if I dont find anything I will consider this :)

@tom_gr7 - this looks like it will fit in well but it just a little bit more than I wanted to pay so Ill have look if I can get it any cheaper else where. But thank you for your help :)

Ideally I want to pay less than £22.50 so that I can fit in any extra stuff that I buy for the laptop so I will keep my eyes open for anything I find!

I never knew that you should use one of these gadgets with a laptop. I've been using my Dell 17.3" laptop for over 3 years without any such device and I am normally on it from 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on some days. In that time, I have never had a problem with overheating or noise problems with it.

I will be buying my next machine from PC specialist with a much higher spec. In that regard, is it a necessity to have a cooler or just advisable?

Cheers

I would say it depends on the components and what you do on the laptop, more CPU or GPU needing programs will cause them to work harder causing it to get hot potentially causing it overheat if not stopped. what are you considering getting and what are you goin to use it for? :)

Depends how you use it, as tom mentioned above if your using the laptop on your lap or on a bed or whatever it may be advisable to guarantee you wont block any of the fans on the laptops base. Saying that however, it is unlikely that using one would stop a laptop from overheating per say - it may reduce the temps but not massively (again as tom said above) :). The laptop itself should not overheat.

You may prefer actually using one if you have the laptop on your lap (or even if its just in-front of you on a desk) but that would be simply up to you.

Hi,

Sorry for the late response. The laptop I will probably end up going for is as shown below with all the spec. I will be using Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition which is a bit of a resource hog. (I know 24 GB of RAM is over the top but I want to be as future proof as possible.) I am not a gamer but I do play some games on the computer and maybe looking into other games to play in the future. I do a lot of writing using Microsoft Word and I do have a lot of applications open at one time. The Dell I have at the moment is only 4 GB and a dual core processor and it has served me well and is still going strong. Unfortunately, having too many applications open on this computer, it sometimes dies and cannot cope in this respect.

So with the new one when I get it, would you advise a cooling stand and if so, what one for use with a 17.3" laptop?

Cheers

A cooling stand is only useful if your whole system is running into the 85s-90s across the board, while you play Crysis at 1080p, Enthusiast settings with 2x MSAA on top. ; ) Multitasking in 2D/web browing/Office will not bring the extremes of the aforementioned case.

Optimus IV has one fan for two heatsinks on the GPU & CPU - for office use, light-medium gaming I would say you won't find the need to use a cooling stand.

I agree with Iroquois Pliskin :) , I would need one since I will be using the CPU and GPU more for mid - high gaming and CAD so it will need to be kept cool.

Thanks for the advice guys. The cooling stand with the speakers; does that in fact cool down your computer and at the same time gives you external speakers for better sound than a normal laptop sound?

Cheers

It probably operates as two additional speakers, they are 4W each tho, so it's an aesthetic feature more than anything else.
