Desktop for Film and Photo

So, my laptop broke down. I got in a hurry to get a new desktop and was being carried away by all the games that I might be able to play with a new computer. So I came up with a fair system in some other thread. Thing is, I usually get bored of computer games after a couple of weeks and after thinking for a while I realize that's far from being what I usually use my computer for.

I need some help configuring a system to maximize the performance of the tasks I undertake on a regular basis. I know sooner or later I'll have a strong urge to play something like Football Manager or Bad Company 2, but this desire will fade away as fast it arrived, so its secondary.

This is what I usually use the computer for. In order of importance:

1- Film Watching. (Very Important. Anything that enhances films will be welcomed. No need for BluRay tho)

2- Photo Editing (I take photos on my free time and enjoy spending time fixing them)

3- Usual Office stuff; Studying; Downloading; Music and Film Searching (Several pages open at the same time), etc..

4- Playing

I absolutely hate slow systems. My laptop was driving my crazy, I was kind of happy with the blue screen of death cause it finally gave me a reason to update. But I don't want a SSD for the lack of space and for being too expensive. But a fast HDD is welcomed.

Also, in one year and a half I'll be starting a degree in Cinema. In the meantime I'll get my own camcorder and find my way around with it and the proper software like I did with the Digital Camera and Photoshop a few years ago. Keep that in mind. I need something for proper video editing. Not for Professional use, but for more than the regular home video editing. Like I said, I'll be learning by myself for the time being, likely to buy books to help me go along.

Do I need firewire? I didn't know what it was up until a week ago. I always use USB. Is firewire faster? Because I read somewhere its about the same speed as USB 2.0? I'm kind of lost here. Anyway, the ports are only £9 so I guess I've nothing to loose by adding it.

For Film Watching, is the graphic card more important than a proper monitor and a sound card?

Budget is around £800. I usually see the i7 related with video editing, but they are expensive and I probably don't need it. But I want a strong processor. I kind of fell in love with the 1090T, but feel free to change if you have a better alternative in order to enhance Film Watching and Photo Editing.

Cheers!

EDIT: On a second thought, I've 2TB on external drives. Perhaps I can go for the cheapest SSD? How much space would I have in a 60GB disk after installing all the basic files, from windows 7 to antivirus and all the other basic software such has vlc and itunes? How much would remain after installing Photoshop etc?

EDIT2: Forgot to mention, budget should include Monitor! Or else its £700

Firewire is faster than USB 2.0, if you have a firewire cable for your camcorder it would be faster to transfer videos over it. You can watch films without any screen-tearing with a very cheap graphics card and onboard sound. I didn't bother with a soundcard in the build because it would involve downgrading another component lowering overall performance.

Fitting an SSD into this build is difficult and wouldn't be worth downgrading in other areas to fit one in. I've put a fast 1TB Caviar Black hard drive in the build though which should be quick enough for everything you want to do.

Any reason to pick the GTX460 over the HD5770 or the HD6850?
And wouldn't the 450W supply be enough?
Also, what's the difference between the GTX460SE and the GTX460 and why is the second more expensive? (SE=second edition? Shouldn't that make it more expensive?)

The GTX460 has CUDA cores which can be utilized by a couple of plugins in some programs like photoshop.

Its only £10 difference between the GTX460 and the GTX460SE so should I really save the £10?

What about that ATI stream thing that I read about?

No I wouldn't but I didn't think you could go much over £800.00, if you can then yeah the normal version is much better than the GTX460SlowerEdition.

Ok, finally, is there somewhere where I can compare the ASUS M4A78LT-M with the ASUS M4A87TD?

What does SATA 3GB and 6GB really stands for?

I'll try to search on google but I would appreciate a reply again. Sorry for bothering :p.

I just read that the 6GB is more useful for SSD since HDD can't even take full advantage of 3GB. But then, the HDD you showed me says something about 6GB.

Is the 6GB HDD compatible with a 3GB motherboard? What does this really means? That this motherboard wont take full advantage of the HDD you showed me? If this is the case, should I get a better motherboard or downgrade the HDD?

This is confusing.

I can't think of anywhere in particular but the M4A78LT-M is a micro atx motherboard and it can't support the high end graphics cards and it can't run two of them at a time. It'll have slightly lower read/write speeds with an SSD and won't be very easy to overclock with. The M4A87TD can support any graphics card and has two USB 3.0 ports on the back.

SATA 3.0GB/S and SATA 6.0GB/S are bandwidth limits on the motherboard, the 3.0 version will bottleneck the speeds of the super fast SSD's but won't negatively affect any of the high performing HDD's so the caviar black will be fine. The SATA 6.0 HDD's are compatible with SATA 3.0 motherboards; it won't cause any problems because HDD's simply aren't able to make use of all the bandwidth provided by SATA 3.0 so the motherboard will be able to take full advantage of the caviar black :)

What about this alternative? Can you give me more details on this motherboard? It should allow me some space to improve my components in the future, no?

Plus, it comes with 7.1 sound onboard instead of 5.1. Does that mean anything if I use headphones?

And if I use headphones, what should I look for for sound quality?

Cheers!

seems like a nice build *one in ur last post* nice PSU for updates in future. Also for the sound, i dont think it matters that much for headphones? *i may stand corrected* just thought it means its better for having the 7.1 devices connected to it. think its pretty standard for headphones. unsure though.

It looks good, yes the motherboard will allow you to upgrade to more RAM and a better graphics card in the future. In terms of headphones it really depends on which ones you use, if they support 7.1 sound then they'll be able to make use of the onboards' 7.1 but otherwise they'll just use whatever they've got.

I use these ones:http://www.trittontechnologies.com/index.php/products/gaming_audio_technology/ax-720/ which are 2.1 surround sound and they make games pretty immersive, so you don't need 5.1 or even 7.1 for a good headset.
