Display doesn't show all resolution modes after a reinstall of windows

I recently had a windows corruption issue that led me to having to reinstall windows from the recovery disk.
I eventually worked out how to do this but I still have one major issue.

The monitor should have about 30 different resolution modes, but it's only showing 5...
1280 * 1024
1024 * 768
640 * 480
800 * 600
1920 * 1080

All at 32 bit True colour and 64 hertz.
It's an Asus VS248HR monitor connected via DVI-D (I've also tried HDMI)

The display adapter driver is:
Microsoft basic display adapter using basicdisplay.sys
version 10.0.15013 winbuild 160101.0800

The monitor is:
Generic PnPmonitor
using monitor.sys
version 10.0.15013 winbuild 160101.0800

I've tried various things but without success. It was fine until the re-install.

One program I tried reported:
No compatible GPU found, hardware acceleration disabled.

Note, I DO NOT have any internet access at all for this computer...but I can download files via another computer.

Any suggestions?

Hiya, is this a PCSpecialist system?

Could you post your full specs from the order page?

You're using a default display driver which isn't right for your gpu.

It's a Z370 Pii motherboard, asus 248HR display, 16Gb mem, W10.
If you need more, how do I get to the order page? I know the order code if that helps.

The basic display driver is your issue.

Have you installed Windows 10 again, or upgraded to Windows 11? If you click the start button then search for Updates, you should be able to access the Windows Update control panel. From here ensure that all updates are installed and also go into the option updates to install them.

It appears that it's simply the Intel display driver not being installed.

I reinstalled win 10. (Possibly I didn't need to, but it's too late to change that.)
Unfortunately this PC has no internet access.

If it's the intel display driver, then I could download it manually and install it myself...IF I knew which one and where it might be.

It's no worries with what install it was, just wanted to know so that I could advise :)

I would aim to hook it up to the internet if you can. Could you not even use USB tether on your phone? There will be a ton of updates required for the system, so always best to get it hooked to a network to install them.

Otherwise:

Should get you going for now.

Thanks for the file pointer. I'll try that. At least now I have some idea what the issue is.

I'll be able to report back next week...I have to use the local library for my internet for now. I know it's primitive!
If only I could get updates via manual downloads!

Thanks to all for the quick responses.

If you don't have Internet access then you can't update Windows - and that's essential after a reinstall. It's not going to function properly at all without the necessary updates. You must get Internet access to it somehow and run Windows Update until no more updates are found. You cannot install all necessary updates and drivers manually (well, technically you could, but you need to know exactly what you're doing to do that).

This thread seems full of unknowns. Do you have any form of router that you can wire to the computer via the lan port. If not, how did you configure the computer and order it from PCS. I mention this because PCS would have installed Windows together with all drivers for the hardware before delivery. Those drivers are also stored in your PCS account and are available for downloading for backing up and subsequent reuse if required.
So ..... do you have access to a router that you can connect to even though you cannot do this wirelessly.

When I got the PC (Oct 18) it worked as I expected. It has never had any updates applied since I got it. I know this is VERY undesirable but without ANY internet access there's nothing I can do.

My only way of adding files is via standard downloads to the local library computer I'm currently using then transferring via a USB memory stick.

If those drivers are 'in my account' then is it possible for me to access them? If so, I can copy to mem-stick and install them that way.

I have checked the system as it is and I'm on Win 10 (1703) which is why these later driver updates aren't working.

That's a six year old version, you absolutely don't want to be using that, it's no longer supported. Without Internet access you have no real options. My best advice would be to download a Linux distro at your library and run that instead of Windows - but even that expects Internet access.

What do you use the PC for if you have no Internet access at home?

I can run everything I want to run, mostly games but some python programming (very limited ability) and most of what I want I can download via the library PC.

Anyway, I have fixed the issue.

As the windows version is VERY old, I needed an old installer program. The one I was pointed to needed a minimum windows level. So, I got the oldest one I could find. The readme (yes, I read readme files!) didn't specify a min windows level so I tried it and IT WORKED.

I've now backed that file off to 3 different places and made notes about it should I ever get in the same mess.
It's odd that I had a motherboard install disk but it didn't have the drivers on it. I would have thought it should have had some drivers just to get people started...

Ah well, my computer pretty much works as it did before the disaster.

(...I must get broadband at home...)

Just as a note for the future, if there's a complication to why you don't have broadband, I recently tested a 4g Mobile broadband router which most of the phone operators now sell under contract for little money. They don't need any installation, all runs off mobile signals, but they're a very worthwhile option these days, and speeds were actually double what BT were giving us at the time, and it was very stable.

You can also buy them off contract on Amazon and places like that but some of them are several hundreds.

The only reason I didn't stick with it was when the router rebooted, it took a while of cycling through 3g then up to 4g before it got to full speed which wasn't suitable as I'm running a 24/7 server, but that was a limitation of the router that Three were offering at the time.

So long as you've got ok coverage by that provider in your area, it's a good alternative if you don't want a fixed line.

But as an example: https://shop.ee.co.uk/mobile-broadband

All the networks do them now, and you can return no questions asked within 14 days, so I tested one from each provider and returned the ones I wasn't happy with.

That's worth a look...thanks.
From my research, EE has the best coverage, but is quite expensive, but Three generally have excellent deals on unlimited caps for data, whereas others put limitations. If you have Three coverage though, they were certainly the best for my use case.

Remember also that PC browsing uses far more data than a mobile phone, so if you do get a cap, make sure you monitor your useage. You can usually extend the cap at any time if you needed to.

I've still got an EE 4G mi-fi device that I used years ago as a 'workshop' router for when I was facilitating at business conferences; and I also used it as a backup to my broadband provider. I would just buy a PAYG monthly SIM (standard one, as the data only ones were MORE expensive) and bill that to the client.

Still got it, as I said, but the iPhone provides faster 4/5g and unlimited data is included.
