DTS® Headphone: X®

Hey Guys,

I’m sorry if this is not meant for this forum, but I’m desperately in need of some help.

So I’ve brought a new laptop 4 days ago, Asus FX504GM, cut a long story I’ve had nothing but aggro from it since switching the thing on, the audio port didn’t pick nothing up, I spent hours on end trying to get Realtek to work, in the end I managed to get it the headset/mic going as it should.

Anyway, in my device manager I have under sound, video and game controllers

Now is Realtek(R) Audio just another version of Realtek HD Audio ?

Or am I completely missing Realtek HD Audio? I ask because I also have something preinstalled called DTS® Headphone: X® which believe it or not, doesn’t work, if I plug my headset it all it does is continue to ask me to plug in a headset, and if I remove them it then asks to connect either and external speaker or internal speaker, well it’s a laptop it has internal speakers which this software doesn’t detect... I have no Realtek Audio Manager either, I’ve not got it down in the bottom corner, I’ve not got it in control panel, I do however have it in program files but the .exe doesn’t launch anything... im guessing there could be a glitch with Realtek and DTS® Headphone: X®.

if i uninstall DTS® Headphone: X® how do i go about reinstalling it? looks like an app to me but its not on the MS store?

Ah man this is doing my head in.

These fora belong to PC Specialist Ltd (PCS) who sell custom built high-end and gaming PCs and laptops so any advice you get on here might be limited. You might want to try a more general forum like Tom's Hardware.

That said, my Realtek HD Audio (on a desktop mind you) shows in Device Manager as Realtek High Definition Audio. You could try updating the driver for your Realtek device and see whether that helps.

Regarding reinstalling DTS, you should have a DVD with the pre-installed software on, or a recovery DVD with Windows and all the pre-installed software on, or (more commonly) a hidden recovery partition that will restore it to the state it was in when you bought it - with all the pre-installed software. The user guide should show you how to boot into that recovery partition (it's typically a function key on boot - F11 is popular).

You do seem to have had a lot of trouble with a new laptop. If it were mine I'd take it back to where I bought it and either get them to set it up so that everything works as it should, or ask for your money back (on the basis that it's not of merchantable quality).

Then you can come back here and we'll spec you up a proper laptop! :D

i really do appreciate the reply bud, thank you.

i hate to say it but it was purchased from Overclockers UK as a surprise gift, and in the box was absolutely nothing apart from a power pack so i'm guessing somewhere there should be a hidden recovery partition, saying that even if i was to do the factory reset, it'll only come how it did when i first started setting it up 4 days ago... (as above) apart from it'll have the DTS non working software on it i guess.... :censored::death:

In which case I'd contact Overclockers, a new laptop shouldn't be this hard to get setup.

From Overclockers site.

30 DAYS / ACCEPTANCE PERIOD (UK & EU)
You are entitled to reject goods if they are faulty (do not match the description, are not of satisfactory quality, or are not fit for purpose). You have up to 30 days to check the goods and contact us if there is a fault. You can decide to claim a refund or request a repair/replacement of the faulty product.

If you are returning for a refund, please include all packaging, cables, manuals, drivers and protective bags. Accessories and promotional items are part of the order and must be returned to ensure the full price of the product is refunded. Free games codes should be unused and still hidden.

Tell them its not fit for purpose and get a refund then buy a laptop from PCS ;-)

Remember that we can't give detailed advice about other vendors/companies.

Also remember that many companies have policies whereby they inspect goods with their own 'technicians' that are returned for being faulty, and if they disagree there's a fault they may ship the system back to you and charge you.

Ofc most places would also have a 14 day returns period where you can send the thing back because you changed your mind. So depending when it was ordered you might not need to prove a fault to return for a refund.

Try their forums and make sure to check out the Ts&Cs in detail.
