External HDD Not Recognised

Hi All,

I brought a Hard drive caddy a while back so i could start transferring files from my old dead laptop to my new laptop.
All worked fine and i've now backed up the files i needed on my work computer. Tried to transfer the files yesterday and my new laptop wouldn't recognise it. I realised this may be down to the format as i played around with this so i could play some videos on my xbox.
Anyway, plugged it into my work PC today, it was recognised straight away, changed the format to NTFS and begun formatting while i left my desk. Came back to find it was unsuccessful. Tried again and the same message appeared. Unplugged and plugged it back in again...and its gone! Not showing up in device manager or disk management!
What has gone wrong? I've tried searching the internet and toms hardware but i keep getting to a dead end. Only suggesting it could be the caddy, but it was working before i reformatted it. Would the formatting cause this to break?

Any help appreciated
