Hi when i plug my Sonnics drive im having issues. At first if i plugged it into the USB next to the keyboard sensor it would stop my mouse and keyboard working then if i plug it in the back it just freezes when im trying to transfer something onto it. Tried the same drive in other desktops and its worked fine. Tried reformatting the drive but no luck.

Thanks

Ben

How many different ones have you tried? The reason I ask is that there are typically 2 different USB chipsets on a motherboard. I'm wondering if perhaps one of the chains has a problem.

If the drive doesn't work on any of the ports then it definitely suggests an issue with the drive/cable. You can get gremlins that come into play where a cable, hardware and varying USB standards are concerned. Older USB standards tend to be a little more loose with their tolerance of said gremlins :D

How old is it?

Is it one that uses the flaky (when moved around a lot like mine) slim USB micro-B Superspeed connections?

Do you have any way to provide external/extra power to it (e.g. mains power adapter, dual USB power cable)...

I've tried them all with no luck and other desktops or laptops and the drive works fine in those.

Unfortunately those parameters don't add up. I know it's logical to you to draw the conclusion that there's something up with the hardware on the PC, but the level of fault finding doesn't add up.

For it not to work on any usb port on the current system yet for it to work on any other PC/Laptop without issue could only point to a software/configuration issue.

For it to be a hardware fault it wouldn't follow across 2 chipsets while no other USB hardware has a problem.

If it's a relatively new system I would completely re-install Windows personally. The only conclusion is that something has gone wrong with the driver-set. This is very difficult to scrutinise when very well versed, the simplest solution is definitely a wipe of the system.
