fans are running at full speed constantly

For some reason my fans are running constantly at maximum speed. I think I stopped a 'service' or 'process' that controls it, trying to disable an ASUS popup I was getting.

I've reset my BIOS but that doesn't fix it. Even if I set the fans to silent in the BIOS they continue to run at full speed. Computer temperature is around 30degrees so not an overheating issue. Any ideas?

I've found an ASUSfancontrol service in msconfig and re-enabled that, but no luck still :(

Great!

So what was the issue, and what did you do to fix it? In case someone else comes across the topic with a similar issue :)

Have you tried removing the drivers with DDU and performing a clean install?

It's not unheard of for bad drivers to screw up fan behaviour.

I'd also suggest a clean install of Windows before buying new hardware, especially because:

I think I stopped a 'service' or 'process' that controls it, trying to disable an ASUS popup I was getting.

I've found an ASUSfancontrol service in msconfig and re-enabled that, but no luck still

1) that sounds like you might have broken something in the OS inadvertently

2) the Asus software you mention from that era was pretty notoriously glitchy - uninstalling it sometimes didn't undo the problems it caused - only a clean install did.

Clean reinstall Windows and don't install any Asus junk. There's other software out there to control or monitor fans - if that's even needed.
