Hi all,

I know almost nothing about building a desktop, other than some basics re. the best graphics cards etc. Can anyone see any glaring problems with this spec? There are a few things I didn't change from the default, and other things I guessed about so happy to take advice. Looking for a gaming setup that will handle everything, and money is (almost) no object.

Thanks in advance.

Should add that I had no idea which chipset to pick, so again happy to take advice on changing that.

If you're waiting for the RTX 3090, you're better off with the Ryzen 5900X or 5950X for the CPU, available to order from 5th November 2020. Pre-overclocked options should be available from PCS after that date. Any X570 chipset is suitable.

I'd reccommend faster RAM (3200MHz), and potentially 2 x 16GB if you run multiple 4K monitors or want to utilise RAM disks.

You'll definitely want an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD from which to run Windows/games. 1TB 970 Evo Plus, 1TB 980 Pro, or 2TB Firecuda are good (i.e. fast) options. You can add a large capacity HDD and/or PCS 2.5" SSD for file storage.

If you're getting a wireless card, go for the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 + BT 5.0 (it's worth the extra £11 over the cheapest option).

If you forego the Liquid Series, you can get the better components for a cheaper overall cost.

What do you want the system to do?? Is this for a professional build or something else? What monitors are you planning on pairing with this? Resolution wise

Thank you, that's a really helpful and detailed answer.

Re. the liquid series, I've always liked the idea of it, but have read mixed things about it. I take it you feel it's not worth the expense?

It's primarily for gaming, and I'll be capturing gameplay and editing videos etc. I don't think I actually need as good a setup as I'm looking at, but I'm future proofing to a certain extent.

Re. monitor, it will be an ultrawide of some sort, around 3440x1440. Maybe https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075JGKX59/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_pE0IFbHWX1YQH

They have more points of potential failure and require ongoing maintenance to keep them functioning properly, which isn’t worth the hassle for me personally, and I wouldn’t be comfortable tinkering with it myself. They do look great of course, but so does ARGB lighting.

An RTX 3080 would be more than enough for that monitor, and far better value. Save the money and use it for a GPU upgrade a few years down the line, or when the need arises. The RTX 3090 carries an extremely high premium for a fractional increase in power that would be wasted, and by the time you actually require more power than a 3080 can provide, there would likely be GPUs far cheaper than and superior to the 3090.

Can you include the configuration link at the bottom of the quote so we can edit it? You'd need to make some adjustments.

Above is the stuff of dreams. If you'll let me spend a little more money I would advise switching out the second M2 drive for the 2TB Firecuda.

Games are big nowadays and with that budget you want the max. Between the primary and the secondary you would have 2.5TB of blisteringly fast gaming space which would definitely keep me more than happy :D

Eh, what's another couple of hundred?

Seriously though, it's a hell of a lot of money. I came into some inheritance earlier in the year, and the person it came from was big into computers so I think would appreciate some of it being spent on a decent one.

Thanks for all your help everyone!

It's always worth mentioning your budget, then the guys know exactly what they are playing with. Your initial build was £3.6k, so @SpyderTracks has already saved you £1k with his build. I dont imagine @Scott is trying to bankrupt you!

Absolutely. Sorry if it came across as having a go, it was absolutely not meant that way. I'm grateful for all the suggestions, and will implement them all, just wanted to show I appreciate it's a pricey build. I said originally that money was almost no object, and I actually expected for the suggestions to take it higher than the original estimate, so it's brilliant that I've been suggested a build that is less, rather than being told to get the most expensive everything.

You guys do great work helping people out!
