Could anybody give a clueless person some guidance? It's not definite, but I may have to make a snap decision within the next week or two, and I'd like to be ready. I'd be using this PC for games (mostly flight sims), VR, work (software development). Realistically, most of its time will be spent on games.

I have a Windows license, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor that will do for now, but later in the year I'll get a "proper" monitor. (Personal situation makes it uncertain for now as to what environment I'll be in, and what size of monitor I can get)

AMD versus Intel - I'd naturally tend towards AMD, especially with my confidence in Intel being knocked after Spectre etc. And Ryzen5 possibly generating less heat. However, the Alder Lake CPUs seem to be objectively better, so that's that. I'd love to see the AMD 5800X3D, but I may not be able to wait for it to appear.

I really want something in a compact case. I'll probably be lugging it between rooms. I would get a "Small Form Factor PC", except I want to avoid thermal issues and fan noise. So not that, but also not a huge tower that's like a piece of furniture.

RGB lighting anywhere in or around the case - no thanks. Even if it comes for free, I'll be disabling it.

So to sum up; small, quiet, unobtrusive. I know, an impossible combination.

With all that in mind, here's what I configured with my limited knowledge an seeing other people's suggestions. It also reflects my budget. What do you think?

In a bit of a bind to hit all of your requirements. Firstly, to find a case that is small, capable and lacking in RGB I've settled on the 4000D. The cheaper 'quiet' cases are quiet by being very solid boxes, and while they don't let much sound out they also don't let much heat out, which is very important with the toasty Alder Lake CPUs. The 4000D is one of the smaller cases that will accommodate a 280mm radiator. Unfortunately it won't also hold a 3080 as they can be upwards of 32cm in length, so it will come down to whether you want a slightly larger case, or whether you're happy to take the hit in gaming performance.

Given you 2 16GB sticks of RAM. 32GB is ample for any game including flight sims. You've mentioned software development but it will take some very heavy use to need more than 32GB. Having 2 sticks now does also give the option of adding 2 more sticks in down the line.

A seperate drive for OS and programs means we can get as much speed as possible on the primary drive. It also makes reinstalling Windows much more convenient.

The larger PSU gives headroom for future upgrades. You should be able to get 7-10 years out of this system, and the heftier PSU means that the only component you should need to upgrade will be the GPU.

Let me know what you think, and we can make further revisions based on the directions that you're leaning, so you're all set to hit the order button when the time comes! :)

Thanks very much @MrWilson , your suggestion is better informed/thought out than the one I posted.

On the RGB lighting, I don't mind this lighting being present; I assume I can either disconnect it from power, or snip a line to the LEDs, or if that's not possible then paint over the LEDs themselves.

One thought I did have though - If I'm to go for a 3070 rather than a 3080 graphics card, perhaps an alternative would be to go for a less power-hungry Ryzen 5950 (or even 5900)-based mini PC with a 3070 instead? It looks to me that real world difference in performance between an Intel 12700 and a Ryzen 5950 is quite small.

I really wouldn’t consider a small form factor PC at this budget. PCS simply don’t have support for high performance SFF PCs. I wouldn’t look at anything more than a 6 core PC being cooled effectively with the cooler options available. At your budget and for your uses I would look at a mid tower build, or potentially look elsewhere if you’re fully set on a SFF build.

Ah fair enough. I actually came across the same advice on other threads here on PCSpecialist a few minutes ago, I was about to delete my post and try a different combination. I don't think any other system builders can beat the laws of physics either :)

This effort (last one, I promise!) is trying to find a middle-ground between size and performance, incorporating your advice... I know the case has lots of RGB, but maybe I can disable it... but I'd be ok with it even if I can't. Also, if heat is still an issue and changing the CPU/motherboard to Ryzen would make it viable, I'd be open to that.

This looks very solid. Only edit I would recommend would be upping the PSU to 1000W just for that headroom for a GPU Upgrade down the line. Something like a 5070 will be a very solid upgrade in a few years time, and it means that you won’t have to swap in a new PSU then.

The 220t is quite nice as it also uses iCue along with the cooler, which makes turning it all off a little more convenient.

I know AC used to rock a 220t so he can give you a bit more info about it if you would like.

Thanks @MrWilson , you've no idea how much I appreciate your advice. If it wasn't for you, I'd have ordered a beast of a machine in a shoebox - and not been able to get the most from it. I'm going to order the last build I posted. The largest PSU that can be added to that case is 850W, but to be honest by the time I'm ready to upgrade the GPU, it won't be a huge problem to look again at cases and PSUs.

Thanks again.

Edit; Actually, funny enough, while the 1000w PSU won't fit, the 1200w appears to be ok. I might upgrade to that. :)

To be honest I wouldn't opt for the 220t for that combination. You're going to be asking for a lot of it in the airflow department so I think you would find the fans spinning up a whole lot more to keep the internal temps down.

The 4000D airflow is a far better selection for this type of use.

It'll work, but there are limitations with it that may annoy you with the acoustics.

Depending on the VR choice, being able to select the 3080 & the 1000w PSU will pay huge dividends also.
