First gaming PC - Advice appreciated

Hi All

So my son (19) is looking for his first gaming PC. Has a PS5 but wants to get more into PC gaming with his mates.

Obviously he wants the best he can get value for money wise (Don't we all!) he was talking of a budget of around £1500 all in but I'm thinking we may have a to push that a bit given that he also wants 2 monitors. He currently plays a fair bit of Apex and those types of games, maybe a bit of COD.

I currently have specked up this one edited from one @MrWilson posted on another thread as a starting point. He does need WiFi which this motherboard has.

Can anyone see anywhere to make any savings on this or improvements please? Do you think the drives are about right and on what one would you put the OS the 1st one?

There are a few things to consider here.

You've opted for 1080p monitors, the PS5 runs at 4k natively. This is going to be a massive downgrade in resolution
The 6600XT is far too powerful for 1080p gaming, it would be more aimed at 1440p.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do right now to compete with a PS5 for value. It's going to knock spots of off a PC even up to £1500. Of course it doesn't come close to the flexibility that a PC offers, but it needs to be understood in order to manage the expectations.

To the actual build itself, I think overall you both need to have a rethink on the system overall. There are a couple of avenues that you can go down but I wouldn't recommend the one you have chosen so far. The following would be what I would personally consider:

1440p 144hz Primary monitor - At least get to the levels of visual fidelity that the PS5 can offer. 1080p would be a serious step down and to spend almost 2k on 1080p nowadays is a bit of a waste.
1080p Secondary monitor - For Twitch/Streaming/Youtube/Movies etc. No point in getting a high spec secondary monitor for this purpose but one that matches aesthetically would always be good.

The above recommendation would likely need the budget pushed out again.

If you are absolutely certain you want to go down the 1080p route then I would down-size the GPU to either save the money, or to prop up the build with a future GPU & monitor upgrade in mind.

Thanks Scott, I have mentioned that to him about the PS5, I think he wants the flexibility of the PC.

He does have a TV in his room he could use but would need to check resolution on that but it's not 4K.

If we were to go down the 1080P route what GPU do you think would be good for that?

For 1080p the 6600 would be the top I would go to. It's £100 less than the 6600XT and much better value.

The 1660 Super would be the next step down again. Comfortable for 100FPS @ 1080p.

How about this monitor as primary and then what would be a good GPU to pair with it do you think?

This is where I'd go mate if you really really wanted two 1080p monitors. there's no point in going to 27" at 1080p it's not ideal, that size of screen you would want a 1440p resolution

I went for a cheaper but very good case and use the savings to up the GPU to the 2060 which is very very good for 1080p

Also that CPU is just completely hideous and an eye sore. It'll probably work but I can't in good conscience recommend it, at least this one looks good and it's definitely overkill but yeah

Hi All,

Son is looking at getting a gaming PC. He has nothing currently and wanted two monitors so that has limited the budget somewhat. They are also 1080p so we are looking at a good system bearing that in mind.

Do you think we can improve on this is any way, should we lower the spec to save money as monitors are 1080p or keep same/similar spec to maybe upgrade monitors later? He wants to get the best he can for his budget. Plays Apex and similar mostly. Currently comes in at £1748

I've rejigged it a little and I reckon this would be a better shout, my only concern would be the CPU cooler it should be fine but the Frostflows aren't as widely tested and reviewed as the branded coolers so they can be unknown quantity.

The 2060 will get you in the door of 1440p but you won't see much over 60FPS for the most part. A couple of years ago it was aimed at around 60-100fps at 1440p. Games will be more power hungry at this resolution now though so you would need to manage your expectations.

As above the 3060Ti is the ideal 1440p pairing.

My advice - get a good 1440p build with a 27 inch 1440p 144 hz monitor and let your son save for a 2nd monitor. There is no need for 2 monitors straight away. Better to spend the money for the 2nd monitor on building a good pc first before worrying about non enhancing peripherals
