First PC - Mainly Editing

Hello Everyone!

Looking to get myself my first PC which will be used for a couple of things;

It'll be used as part of my Youtube set up which has been a laptop up until now. So it'll mainly be used to run my Elgato software whilst i'm recording my Xbox, and then subsequently running editing software when i'm editing the videos.

It will also be used to play 'Football Manager' as well as recording the game with OBS. I had previously tried to do this with my laptop but it evidently couldn't handle it as the footage came out incredibly choppy and unusable so will be looking for a computer than can handle all of this.

It wont be used for any high graphic games or huge editing files so i guess it doesn't need to exactly be top of the range. Not really looking to spend over £800 for the PC (will sort the monitors etc out afterwards) so would greatly appreciate any help that could be offered. Thank you!

I've also just realised you can purchase monitors, mouse & keyboard via the website also! in which case i guess my budget goes to about £1100-1200 all in

I've done a bit more reading and had a play around and have come up with the following. Firstly i'm wondering if its sufficient enough to handle what i need it for, and secondly i'm wondering if there's anything glaringly obvious i've missed as i'm useless with anything technical. Also if there's anything overkill in here i can save money on i'd welcome it! Thanks

I wasn't planning on spending that much on it but i guess i could push it out that far if all the improvements warranted it which it seemed to from my very limited reading / playing around on the site.

Thank you for your reply :)

In terms of Intel vs AMD - just had a quick search and am i right in thinking that AMD are better performance wise when it comes to gaming/ recording and editing? (Apologies if this is a very basic question)

My current laptop seems to do a decent enough job of editing and running elgato software. But the main stumbling block was running 'Football Manager' whilst recording it with 'Open Broadcaster Software'. The footage was really choppy and laggy so that's the main reason i'm making this upgrade- i presume this was a problem with my laptop being subpar (no idea on the technical term!)

Thank you so much :)

AMD are pretty much the top of the pile across the board now to be honest. Intel has the slight edge for gaming but it's by a few % points that makes no real world difference. In every other area they get destroyed per £.

The limitations with your laptop will be cores/threads. That's why I opted for the 3700X as it has 8 cores and 16 threads. Footy manager loves frequency so the 3700X has a little bit of an edge there too over the 3600.

I've also taken your uses into account when considering the storage, so have gone with fast storage for the FM database queries etc.

Hello! was meant to be ordering this PC back in April, but due to ill health didn't get round to it.

Having gone back to the re-configure page - the only thing that has changed is the case as it seems it's been removed. Is there any particular case that i should replace it with? (The price seems to have dropped about £150 as well!)

I've slightly changed what i'll be using it for, mainly that i won't be playing Football Manager on it! I'll be using it for:

Recording Xbox gameplay with my Elgato
Editing said footage (Sony Vegas)
Recording camera footage (Canon EOS 4000D using EOS Utility software)
And Potentially streaming in the future (probably using OBS)

I'm guessing this build will still be ok with the things i'm planning on using it for?

I'll also be using one of these to place it on - https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/linnmon-adils-table-black-plywood-s59331381/

Do you have any recommendations on where i should be placing the PC (& xbox) for airflow? I only ask because last time i had a PC (10 or so years ago now!) i can remmeber it overheating a fair bit and my room does get fairly hot in the summer.

Thanks for any help you can give me, you've been a tremendous help with building this!

Hi! unfortunately can't go above the £1200 i have set aside for the PC

Do you still think it'll be ok going for a slightly cheaper option?

Thanks!

Yeah, the 3700X is fine. The 3800XT is just another level, that's all. Won't be night and day different though :)

Hi - just to check - is it worth me switching to an SSD as my first storage drive? apologies if it seems a daft question - not entirely sure how memory works - just remember that SSD's have always been very good when i've used laptops with them!

Edit - i see there's an SSD under '1st M.2 SSD' - It's asking me if i want my OS installed on said SSD - Guessing i do? thanks!

Yes and yes. :)

Yes, you definitely want that SSD.

Yes, you want the OS on the SSD.

It's an internal card so would be installed fully and if you order with windows, drivers should all be pre installed also.

Hi all,

Had the PC for a few weeks now, and for some reason i can't for the life of me get wifi on it. Internet works fine with an ethernet powerlink that I use with my Xbox (one of these) but can’t seem to pick up my WiFi network (occasionally picks up 4/5 of my neighbours networks but mostly says no networks found)

Initially it did pick up my network but when I entered the password it kept telling me I can’t connect to this network

I’ve gone through about 10 different solutions I’ve found online but nothing has worked thus far

Unless I’ve missed something very obvious when setting up my PC, then it seems I’m stuck like this which isn’t a major deal, but a bit annoying none the less

Any ideas on anything I can try?
Thanks!

Have you attached the antenna to the wifi card?

As above, what you are describing is a lack of signal strength, which more often that not is due to the antennae not being attached.
