Fractal Programs

Hi All I've always found fractals fascinating and so I've decided to have a go at creating some. I know there's a ton of programs out there but I need some advice on a suitable one for a noob like me, I understand some can really put your computer under some 'stress' , I have an Intel I5 quad core so hopefully it can cope!. Any suggestions please?
