i am thinking of buying a high end gaming PC with a budget of around £1500 and was wondering is there much difference between

i7 2600 and a geforce 580 3gb

or go for the athlon and a AMD HD 6990 4gb

or is there a better option.
The pc is mainly for playing games like deus ex, skyrim and diablo 3 etc

If you post up the full spec you are thinking of getting, will be much more useful for us to recommend a spec.

Godlike
Go for first spec but pic the raven case. go for the i5 2500 cpu as its performance is near an i7 and holds plenty of power for gaming. go for the 1333mhz ram as they are fast already as the 1600mhz is usually for some good overclocking but you dont need that for gaming. go for the 750w psu as that is plenty unless you wish to add alot of components to it but eht 750w can still have plenty of breathing room for upgrades.

you can keep the coolit cpu cooler but not really needed and a titan or tripple copper will be fine to keep cpu temps low.

apart from those adjustments specs are fine. :)
