Gaming pc for living room/tv

Hi,

I'm looking to get a gaming rig after being without a pc for about 15 years. Since then it's been mac for work and consoles for gaming. We've got a PS5 which myself and the kids love, but I'm looking to run a PC alongside it for things like the MS and PC exclusives, Sim Racing (just got a wheel which is ridiculously good fun), and also so my son can start getting into the Minecraft modding community. He likes his art too, so it would be good to get him trying out some 3D programs - he'd love to be a game artist or animator when he grows up.

Initially this is going to be plugged into our main TV - a 4k 65inch OLED that will run 60hz. Budget in the £3-3.5k range - looking for top end graphic performance and speed that will last a while before needing upgrading. IF/when we do upgrade the TV it will probably be to a 120hz model, so would be nice if it had the potential to run games at that frame rate but not a deal breaker. Because it's in the living room, the quieter the better and ideally it would look ok too,

I've looked at Scott's guide which was unbelievably helpful - probably the most useful resource I've found in terms of components, so thanks a lot for that!!

I've gone for the 12gb 3080 - similar price to the 10gb 3080 on PCS. Says it's on offer. Seems to offer a good level of future proofing whilst being a fair bit cheaper than the Ti, and should cope with 60Hz 4k fine for most games I believe?? Ideally I want to be able to route 5.1 sound through the hdmi port of the graphics card and into my av amp, which looks to be an option with the GeForce control panel.

Gone top end on the PSU, and what I think is a decent case? Not sure on the motherboard and cooling - seems a decent match for the system? Gone M.2 SSD for the main drives for o/s and games because I definitely want fast startups. From my experience with macs the easiest speed upgrade you could give them was swapping an HDD for an SSD as it was always the bottleneck. There's an HDD in there as a storage drive because I might move my music and Roon server onto it.

I don't really understand about braided power cables - are they purely an aesthetic thing for the inside of your case, which I'm not planning on spending much time looking at? Or are they worth adding to a high spec pc?

Anyway - any advice appreciated!

Thanks so much - really useful! Nice saving on the cpu, and I really wanted a 2TB ssd but the high speed one was just too pricey. Just kind of assumed that speed was optimal as I’ve just upgraded my PS5 SSD and that requires the high speed SSD.

I’m pretty clueless on the motherboard so quite happy to go with the TUF rather than the Strix if there’s not likely to be anything I could benefit from.

Do you think the braided power cables are worth the extra?

Excellent thanks! Just need to pick a colour now.

Actually, just playing with the spec and switched out the 12gb 3080 for the 10gb 3080, and contrary to what I thought earlier it’s actually about £150 cheaper for the 10gb, so either pricing’s changed or more likely I was reading it wrong.

Browsing around the advice on this forum it certainly seems like I’m unlikely to notice a difference between the 12gb and 10gb for most games. So maybe 10gb now, then upgrade to the next gen in a couple of years?

Just to say I've ordered this pc based on @MrWilson's updated spec. Thanks so much for the help, and for @Scott's original pc components guide which was incredibly helpful and the only reason I managed to get a starting spec that was even vaguely sensible.

This forum is a great resource, and the main reason I ended up buying from PCS. Hope they chuck you guys some free stuff every now and then!

I'm going to oppose the advice on the secondary drive only. I firmly believe that the direct drive loading from the games drive is going to have a substantial impact in load times in the near future (The PS5 is a great example of this, the faster the M2 drive the better).

Going off of previous testing and videos I would whole heartedly agree that it wouldn't make much of a difference between SSD/M2 Gen3/M2 Gen4 but this will be ripped up pretty soon.

Don't get me wrong, it's a luxury option...... but £3-3.5k is a luxury build.

Oh, Firecuda 530 would be my choice for the 2nd drive. It's faster in reads/writes than the 980 pro. It's better value. I tend to choose the 980 pro for the primary drive as it has the better all round performance.
