Genesis IV Second HDD

My Genesis IV arrived today and I was hoping to add in my old laptops HDD as a second drive so I went for the option to make space. Just wondering how to access that space, I don't want to remove anything more than I have to so I don't lose parts. Thanks for the help.

Mine should arrive tomorrow and I intend to do exactly the same thing! So I too would appreciate any advice if it's not simply a slide-out tray.

The Genesis IV only has one 2.5" HDD slot:

That is, unless you got the 2nd HDD slot instead of an optical drive. If that's the case, then chances are you'll need to open the bottom of the panel of laptop, unscrew the HDD bay, then slot it out. Then you can put the HDD in it, and reverse the steps up to here.
I can't say all this for definite though, not having seen the insides of the Genesis IV.

I reckon my Genesis IV will be arriving near the end of this week (with a 2nd HDD bay), so if you like I can do a video on adding an extra HDD.

I was hoping it would be just like a CD drive - press a button and it pops out :D

But since I don't suppose I'll be removing it much, I'm happy with something you have to unscrew. It actually seems a lot more sensible because the consequences could be serious if you accidentally open it :) So long as it doesn't void the warranty having to mess around inside the laptop.

That wouldn't be a great idea - suddenly unplugging a HDD isn't good for it unless it's a hot-swap one ;)

It won't void it, but if you damage the laptop in the process of doing this then it wouldn't be covered by the warranty.

Haha I don't suppose I meant the actual drive - more like the holder :D

Since the second HDD caddy is advertised as a feature, I'd be surprised if it required really dangerous or difficult work to get to it.

Oh indeed, but you do get the occasional person (there's always one) who's careless with it and ends up slipping the screwdriver (usually by pushing it too hard), which then drags across some important component in a dragging motion...

My last laptop had a completely separate panel and isolated box/space for the HDD, so it would have been impossible to damage anything other than the connector pins themselves if you only opened it in the place you were supposed to. If this laptop has a similar configuration, I'd be happy and I think PC specialist would be safe from any complaints by people who caused accidental damage to their machines.

I'd imagine, though, that if other components were exposed in the same area as the secondary HDD, customers might have grounds to complain. Obviously I don't know the law on it but I'd guess that if you don't put appropriate warnings on a device which you can reasonably expect to be purchased by average users with no technical knowledge, and then advertise a feature of the laptop which you don't mention requires care and technical skill to use safely, you probably risk some trading standards complaint if someone then breaks it by accident in a way which would not have broken, say, a standard CD drive. Especially since it is marketed as a simple alternative to a CD drive, and it would be reasonable for an average user to believe it's comparably safe and well-tested.

Don't actually know why I just wrote that, but I suppose it would be interesting to know if I'm right or wrong on it.

I'm not sure where PCSpecialist put the hard drive (in slot 1 or 2) but here is the manual for the laptop (it also came on your driver disc):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14385580/Manual.pdf

Pages 123-127 are what you are after, perhaps a few pages before that to see how to remove the main component panel.

1 screw to access the primary HDD and 3 screws to access the secondary HDD.

Hope that helps :)

Wow, yeah! Absurdly detailed. Surprisingly, they're not available until after you've bought one and accepted the delivery, so you don't know how awesome the support is :p

Ah thank you for the help, because of the lack of CD drive I couldn't access the CD (and the usb one is only being detected at bios which is odd). I'll give that a go later on in the week thanks.

My post? I think not :)

I was referring to the instructions you provided for removing the optical drive, which involve removing one screw and then sliding the drive out. I made the generalization that, if the optical drive was replaced by something else (like a second HDD caddy), then the instructions would be the same.

When I say second HDD caddy, I mean a caddy for the second HDD, if that's what had you confused?
