Getting confusing info about processor speed in Windows 10 Task Manager!

Hi all,

This is about a PCS rig. I got a i7-5820k (never overclocked but it came with liquid cooling) and windows 10 task manager is giving me conflicting info. at the top it says 3.30 ghz, then down at the bottom it says speed = 2.87. then it says maximum speed = 2.90 ghz. here's a pic: https://postimg.org/image/dllh2uim7/

Any ideas? I bought the PC thinking that I'd get the full 3.30 ghz as advertised without needing to overclock. I was thinking about calling PCS but then decided to try the forum first. Any input would be highly appreciated. Thanks

As above, it's known thing that Task Manager lies: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2952635/cpu-showing-higher-speed-task-manager-windows.html

And there are considerations with stock speeds varying with the CPUs dynamically anyway: http://superuser.com/questions/1015573/windows-10-task-manager-shows-two-different-cpu-speeds
I.e when your PC doesn't need to be running at full pelt, the CPU will run at a lower frequency than it has to to save power.

Does it on my PC too. Cpu-Z should see you right :)

And if you want to check speeds when under load, try checking while running cinebench or something

Depends on what you are doing and how demanding it is on CPU resources.
For instance, I have an i7-3740QM with frequency of 2.7 GHz to a turbo max of 3.7 GHz. Doing nothing, CPU say 1%, the frequency is about 1.2 GHz. If I play a video file the CPU may increase to 11% and the frequency to 2.5 GHz. If I play the timeline within a video editing program the CPU may be about 40% and the frequency 3.3 GHz.

Your CPU has a frequency of 3.3 and turbo max of 3.6 GHz. At the CPU of 2% 2.87 GHz I would suspect that there is still a bit of background activity going on. However your 140 watt CPU may not work in quite the same way as my 45 watt laptop which is designed to be more economical. No idea why the max speed is quoted as 2.9 GHz (would have thought it should be 3.3).

If you have doubts then try a test with 'Passmark' for example.
