Graphics issues

Currently my screen is constantly flickering/flashing,, it is not flickering to black but going lighter and darker rapidly, on a white screen its barely noticeable, only when you add colour do you see it, its very distracting. it started by doing what can be seen (http://puu.sh/7PeIc.jpg) there. After restarting the screen now only lightly flickers, but constantly, no reprieve. I have clean installed the drivers twice, no change. When the drivers are uninstalled the flickering still persists, also in safe mode. I am running:

Case- COOLERMASTER ELITE 430 BLACK CASE
Processor- Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-3570 (3.4GHz) 6MB Cache
Motherboard- ASUS® P8Z77-M: MICRO-ATX, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs, ATI®CrossFireX
Memory- 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT)
Graphics Card- 2GB AMD RADEON™ HD7870 - DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable
1st Hard Disk- 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHEd
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Memory Card Reader- INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT
Power Supply- 450W Quiet 80 PLUS Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan
Processor Cooling INTEL SOCKET LGA1155 STANDARD CPU COOLER

About an hour before this occurred there was a graphics driver error, the first for quite some time. 'Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.'

Any idea?

Okay, the fluttering petered out gradually. It was extremely noticeable at first but slowly, slowly, reduced in intensity. Now I'm not sure its there at all.

How and why? I dont see such a graphical glitch petering out for no reason, and so gradually?

Well the flickering has gone, so I'm going to wait to see if it happens again, which knowing my luck it will.

Can monitors/cables cause errors such as these? Also screen artefacts? Since I got this set-up I've gotten a set of lines, about 4 total, purple-pink in colour with about 4 other little blocks dotted around the screen. Mind, this only shows up on start-up, on the black screen directly after the Asus/BIOS option screen and only lasts for half a second. Then nothing else, but it is every time. Apparently this didn't show up when PCS tested it at their end. That pretty much points to something on my end right? Namely the monitor/cable.

I didn't realise simple monitors could be capable of such consistent and complex problems, I thought it was a case of working or not working, perhaps pixel loss.

Sometimes the cables can cause persistent errors if they are not white plugged in properly or moved etc. it's worth ruling it out as boozad suggested.
