GTA 4 cut scenes freezing

Hey all, as we have a few avid GTA 4 players here just wondered if anyone else had come across this issue.

I lose all sound in game and once the sound has gone every cut scene just semi freezes. What is random is if something in the scene isnt a major factor in the dialogue it doesnt freeze. For example waves in the sea still move, birds still move about etc but the actually scene doesnt do anything. It wont allow me to skip through the scene either which is dam annoying.

Im probably about halfway through the story line now and this has been doing it since day 1, but started off at 30 mins+ before it did it, now im lucky if I can pick up a misson before it happens. The actual game (although minus sound) plays fine, I can drive about, kill people, ya know, the normal GTA things to do just cant complete any missions.

Once the sound has gone I have to ctrl, alt delete to close the program as it just goes to black screen if i choose exit. I dont lose sound of anything else at the same time (if im listening to music for example the tunes carry on) so its GTA related rather than a hardware issue.

I have tried reinstalling a few times and get exactly the same thing, and have tried on a few different game versions with the same results.

Its getting annoying now as wanted to play through the game and get as many achievements as possible, then mod it up, as it stands I am going to be lucky to even get through the first play through.

Every other game I have installed and played is fine, so def just GTA related, hoping one of you guys may be able to help. Tried a google of the issue and although get a load of posts related to game freezing, none of which seem similar to my problem.

At least the game was only a few notes if it isnt fixable :)

Using onboard sound, and have already bought sr3, which is a much better game :)

Just wanted to finish gta as I never got around to it on the ps3.

Might try different realtek drivers later, have sound 'issues' anyway so will buy a soundcard at somepoint.

Hardware related after all

So it turns out it is semi hardware related.

I installed the realtek drivers (due to other sound issues i had removed them and was just using windows drivers which had seemed to fix my previous issue http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?14992-weird-sound-issue) and had no complete sound loss or freezes, just the audio cutting out every few mins for a few seconds.

Now the question is due I RMA my system (already spoke to PCS about this when I had the first issue, they said it sounded like a dodgy audio port on the MB and it would need replacing, RMA wouldnt be an issue) or just buy a soundcard, which would sort the issue, bar leave me slightly out of pocket.

I had previously decided to not RMA as the fix with the windows drivers seemed to work and dont wanna be without my system for a week or so, but if I get the problem I have with other games further down the road its gonna be a tad annoying to say the least.

Currently going to play through GTA and get the story done without playing anything else, then go back to the windows drivers so I can listen/watch/play other stuff without an annoying silence every 2-3 mins.

I think in the long run it would be more beneficial to have the motherboard replaced by pcs. A pain, I know, however, I'd rather have a fully working board than needing to pick up a soundcard.

I have been debating the same, off on holiday in a week and a half so might be ideal to get it done then as im not at home for 7 days. With a RMA do I have to remove fans etc that I have installed? or can I just send it back as it is?

Will drop an email to PCS later or tomorrow, see how long it takes to get the RMA to go through as ideally If i could get the unit picked up the day before holidays I will be happy :) Im guessing we can specify a date for pick up same as we can for delivery, hopefully anyway

I'd give them a call mate, emails can sometimes take a day or so to reply, in this case you want one pretty promptly, If you check the waiting times here before you call, you can minimise ya time on the phone :)

ps thanks for the rep :)

Working day shift Tuesday and Wednesday so can't call til Thursday at the earliest. Don't go on holiday til end of next week so can hopefully sort it.

Have decided on a def rma now so will just be without a PC for a bit if I don't get it done in time. Might mean my Xbox will actually get switched on again :)

RMA shouldn't take too long i don't think, maybe a week max? :)

Will be worth it either way to get this fixed, worked out its the rear mic port thats the issue, when a mic is plugged in it randomly activates the front headphone jack on and off, causing the sound to obviously cut out. There are work rounds for this, like deactivating the front ports which works, or of course I could just use the front mic port port but I may as well get it fixed now, especially as I have a week away :)

Gonna reply to the message sent from PCS tech support with this new bit of info, hopefully they will still agree that a RMA is needed and try and get it booked for 1 day next week, then fingers crossed it wont be much after my holiday that my baby is back with me :p
