Well thanks guys, you've been more useful than pc specialist have. And yeah with the card i self it seems more hassle to try and keep it cool than its worth. I will buy a new one, probably a gtx 650ti

To be very honest, dont buy a new card just yet, as you still have the high cpu temps.

I'd suggest dropping the overclock, would be a good place to start.

The 2gb model has more bandwith and as far as i know should handle higher resolutions fairly well. Both cards should run modern games on high with a few settings tweaks. And yes 90c is still very high, you want to shoot for about 75 under load. Are you familiar with bios settings and resetting your overclock?

no clue mate. but I have no. issue with dropping the OC. just taking some internal pictures now.

my budget for new card 150. not prepared to spend over 200. gti650 seems to suit me fine.

Resetting the mobo configuration is a wee bit trickier because we have hard drive partitions set up. My knowledge of your bios is limited, so you would have to do some reading on this, or perhaps another forum member can help you out.

those pictures are the wrong ones, here are the others.

So you're saying under 100% cpu load 90c is too hot? under normal load it does sit at 75 and under.

Hmmm I take it there is no way to just set overclock settings to default without resetting the bios?

you may need to tilt your head left when you look lol.

There is you would have to do it manually, under the AI menu in your bios. Most likely you will be lowering your cpu ratio down to about 20. I'd definitely recommend doing a little reading on this/watching a youtube video (such as this one for your mobo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPyHVGmyjQo ) before altering bios settings. Your pc looks reasonably clean with decent airflow so there's no real reason for the gpu to be overheating other than a fault. 75 on normal load is okay for the cpu.

that video is helpful thanks.

well a thanks again for everyones help. regardless if the cpu is causing an issue or not. the gpu clearly needs replacing. I would have liked to have had some way of cooling it. I heard there is a mod you can do where you stick a cpu liquid cooling on it but that is far beyond what I think I can do lol.

I will just buy the gtx650i seems reasonably priced.

These do it yourself new liquid cooling options you can buy, I take it you just remove the heatsink, apply the paste and then put the liquid cooling on the cpu?

Are you referring to liquid coolers for CPU's? If yes, they are relatively easy to install yes. - But you do need to have access to the back of the motherboard to fit the backplate on. In some cases you ca do this just be removing the rear case panel, if the motherboard cutout is big enough. But in some other cases you have to remove the whole motherboard. Which can be quite awkward. I'd check with your case to see how big the cpu cutout is, before buying anything.

As for liqud cooling gpu's, there are not many liquid cooled gpus on the market and those that are very very expensive and high end cards. Unless you go for a full watercooling setup - quite complicated.

The 650ti seems like a good idea to be honest. You have the pick of cards, palit, asus, evga, msi. With a 650ti you wont need any sort of liquid or watercooling for it.

Yeah there is sufficient room on the back of the motherboard if I remove the other panel. I'll see how the new card works before worrying about changing the cpu cooling.

Yeah HD7870 a bit too much more than what I want to pay. Looking at the 7850 it does seem better than the 650ti and is the same price.

I'm just a bit skeptical as I've not used an amd card in a long time. Well I basically use the machine for gaming, so whatever of the two cards I will game better with. i'm guessing these cards will both be quieter than my current card lol.

lol, both cards will be considerably cooler and quieter than the 480! I'd go for an nvidia card all the way. But they cost a bit more. If you were willing to go for 200 quid, you could get a very good 660ti.

Good good cards. At this price point I'd pick up whatever you could get on offer. Its not unheard of for 7870s to be for around 150. Im not sure what games (if any) nvidia/amd are offering with their gpus, thats worth a look in too. Nvidia make solid cards but the 7850/7870 are cards I've put in machines I've built for friends and I am super happy with their perfomance, although its nvidia in my own machine.

ok i'll be going with the 7870 found for around 155£. probably get the xfx one as there is no evga and i've heard not so good things about sapphire. hopefully it will fit in, looks just as big as a gtx480
