GTX 680 vs HD7970

I'm in a dilemma over which GPU to buy as I'm hearing that the HD 7970 is performing much faster then the GTX 680 in games due to the new catalyst drivers but AMD has a bad driver history. And I'm not sure if AMD has the same or better features for it's GPUS such as Adaptive V-sync. So I would just like suggestions on what GPU would be preferred for gaming.

This is what I'm planning to get along with the GPU

ASUS P8Z77-V Intel Z77 £139.99

Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000 C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit £46.99

Novatech PowerStation Black Edition 750W Silent ATX2 Modular Power Supply £64.98

Philips 247E3LSU 24" LED Monitor £124.99

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 3770K 3.50GHz Socket LGA1155- Retail £259.99

Fractal Design R3 Black Pearl - now with USB 3.0 £74.99

Asus Xonar DS £39.98

Samsung S222BB 22x DVD+/-RW SATA Black - OEM £13.98

Total Cost: £765.90

I put the processor in bold because I'm not sure if I want to get it now so I can spread out the cost, this is part of my Student Loan and I don't wanna waste it just like that, I've already earmarked £1000 as savings so I've got £1400 to spend but I have a job so I'm hoping I won't have to spend too much out of it. I already have a hard drive I'm going to use so it wasn't included in the list. I'm hellbent on having the most powerful PC components so don't try talk me out of it ;) I'm also ordering the parts themselves so that I can actually learn to put a PC together myself, this is something I would really like to do.

Anyways, suggestions please!
